This study evaluated the factors influencing the variation in the lactose content of milk in Holstein and Jersey herds in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, using multivariate analysis. Data from 73 dairy herds in the Dairy Herds Improvement Program of the State of Santa Catarina were provided by the Santa Catarina Association of Cattle Breeders (ACCB). A total of 46,242 monthly records of Holstein and Jersey (59 and 41 % of the total records, respectively) cows from 2009 to 2012 were analyzed using multiple correspondence, factor, and cluster analyses. Lactose content was observed to correlate with somatic cell count and parity, whereas the evaluated breeds, as well as the production and concentrations of fat and protein in the milk, were not associated with the lactose content. The cows were categorized into three groups, the first consisting of cows of both breeds with low lactose content (4.19), high somatic cell score (5.82), and higher parity (2.50), contrasting with two other groups each with mean values characteristic for Holstein and Jersey breeds, respectively. Analysis of cows without subclinical mastitis (<200,000 somatic cells ml -1 ) revealed that the relationship of parity with lactose level was independent of the effect of somatic cells. Lactose contents less than 4.4 % were observed in autumn. Overall, the present study suggests that the lactose content of milk is influenced by somatic cell count and parity and that it varies seasonally; however, it is not related to breed, milk yield, milk fat content, or milk protein level.

a b s t r a c tThe importance of animal production in the overall context of human activity is undisputed and influences food supply, job security, income producing, as well as landscape and local ecosystems conservation. This relevance enhances the charges by society as the environmental impacts of various activities, especially in relation to ruminant production amid the current problems of climate changes. In this context, we analyzed the main environmental impacts of two typical beef cattle production systems from southern Brazil, namely the extensive system (ES) and the improved system (IS), and identified the components that have the greatest environmental impacts using the life cycle assessment method. The basis of the system construction was a cattle herd that originated from 100 weaned heifers, four weaned calves, and the progeny of these cattle during their productive life (12 years), and the land areas, external inputs, and other natural resources and technologies necessary to the operations. The functional unit was the production of 1 kg of live weight. The values of greenhouse gas emissions, land use, and freshwater depletion in the ES were higher compared with those values obtained for the IS (22.52 and 9.16 kg CO 2 equivalents; 234.78 and 21.03 m 2 a; and 0.217 and 0.0949 m 3 , respectively). These variations were attributed to the permanence time of the animals in each system and to the quality and production of the pastures. The ES presented lower potential impacts than the IS on metal depletion and soil acidification (0.000519 and 0.0536 kg Fe equivalents; and 0.0028 and 0.0038 kg SO 2 equivalents, respectively) mainly due to the pasture improvement practices and the salt supply to the animals. Moreover, the values of freshwater eutrophication and fossil depletion were higher in the ES than in the IS (0.00383 and 0.00219 kg P equivalents and 0.0042 and À0.1255 kg oil equivalents, respectively). While the pasture nutrient loss from runoff and leaching defined the values of eutrophication, the introduction of legumes compensates the use of fossil fuels. The diversity of the results provides a better understanding of the environmental impacts of different production systems and of regional singularities.

The high productivity of dairy cattle, while keeping the ability to adapt and ensure the basic physiological functions of the body, creates the conditions for profitable milk production and efficient animal usage. The development and implementation of selective improvement of breeds and types methods requires the study of biological features of cattle, adaptive parameters of its productive potential. The studies were conducted on the farm of Vinarivka village of Kyiv region. The types of HNA were determined by the method of food conditioned reflexes. Four experimental groups were formed by the results of the conditioned reflex study. The cows of the experimental group feed additive “Germatsink” was applicated at a dose of 10 ml/day within 30 days. Animals in the control groups (with different types of higher nervous activity) received a standard diet. The goal of the study was to determine the correlation between productivity and the content of some macro- and microelements in the serum and blood cells of cows after feed additive “Germatsink” application. Studies have shown that Germatsink application leads to changes in the relationship between productivity and the content of some minerals in the cows’ serum. However, there was weak correlation between phosphorus and calcium in the serum and average daily yield (r = 0.41; p <0.05), and significant relationship to the content of potassium, magnesium and lithium is disappear. It was found strong correlation between content of potassium, magnesium and cuprum in serum and fat content of milk of these animals. In 30 days after Germatsink was administered, the calcium (r = -0.48; P <0.01) and Zinc (r = 0.39; P <0.05) content was related with milk yield in cows. It was noted a change in the relationship between the quality of milk and the content of some elements in the blood cells of cows. In particular, increase of relationship between content of magnesium (r = 0.52; P <0.001), zinc (r = 0.48; P <0.01), cooper (r = 0.38; P <0.05) and fat content of animal’s milk.
