1The objective of this work was to provide means to obtain genetic gain in apomictic species of the genus Paspalum by identifying traits that simultaneously show high correlation and heritability. Thus, to determine the amount of phenotypic variation due to genetic and environmental effects and the degree of association between leaf dry matter production and other traits of forage interest that are easy to select and measure will bring agility and economy in the selection of forage species. The experiment was conducted in the years 2009/10 and 2010/11 in the municipalities of Eldorado do Sul and Augusto Pestana, RS, Brazil, in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. The increase in the direct selection pressure on total and leaf dry matter of apomictic accesses of the genus Paspalum is enhanced by a greater contribution of genetic effects than environmental effects on the composition of the phenotypic variance. Efficient genetic gain in leaf production is achieved by indirect selection of total dry matter, which is a trait of high heritability and easy to select and measure.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the Per se performance of elephant grass hybrids obtained by partial diallel crossing and also their parents for energy purposes through agronomic traits during rainy and dry seasons. The experiment was conducted at Pesagro experimental station, Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, Brazil, in randomized blocks, with three repetitions. The crosses were made between contrasting parents in a partial diallel scheme with 5 female parents x 5 male parents. The treatments consisted of ten parents, twenty-five hybrid combinations and the control. Three cuts were realized for evaluations (April and October 2013 and April 2014). The characteristics evaluated were: plant height (ALT), in m; stem diameter (SD), in cm; leaf blade width (LB), in cm; number of tillers per linear meter (NP); dry matter percentage (%DM) and dry matter production (DMP), in t.ha-1. Variance analysis were performed and the means were grouped according to Scott-Knott test (P <0.05). It was oberved that the hybrid H4 (Cuban Pinda x Taiwan A-144), H7 (Cameroon - Piracicaba x Três Rios), H8 (Cameroon - Piracicaba x Mercker 86-Mexico), H10 (Cameroon - Piracicaba x Roxo), H13 (P241-86-Piracicaba x Mercker 86-Mexico), H17 (IAC Campinas x Três Rios) and H18 (IAC-86-Campinas x Mercker 86-Mexico) presented high biomass production.

Linear relations among pigeon pea traits

The objective of this research was to evaluate the linear relations among pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.), cultivar BRS Mandarim, traits and identify the ones applied for indirect selection. Two uniformity experiments were carried out, in an experimental area located 29º42’S, 53º49’W and with 95m of altitude, selecting 360 plants per experiment, totaling 720 plants. For each plant, the number of nodes was counted and the height and stem diameter were measured, for ten evaluation times (62, 69, 76, 83, 90, 98, 104, 111, 119 and 125 days after sowing - DAS) in the first experiment and 18 times (44, 51, 58, 65, 72, 79, 86, 93, 100, 107, 114, 120, 128, 135, 141, 148, 156 and 162 DAS) in the second experiment. During plant flowering, i.e. the 125 DAS in the first experiment and 162 DAS in the second experiment, the fresh and dry mass for each plant was obtained. The sigmoidal model was adjusted and it was studied the relations among the traits through correlation and path analysis. In the pigeon pea crop, the stem diameter has a positive and linear relation with the fresh and dry mass and it can be used for indirect selection.
