Abstract: Objective: To assess the performance of central obesity indicators by correlation and agreement considering the body mass index in the nutritional assessment of adolescents according to sex and age. Methods: Cross-sectional census study with 635 adolescents, aged 10-19 years (342 males and 293 females), studying in a public school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. “…Studies evaluating the distribution of fat in adolescents, with similar results of this study, found a strong association between BMI and WC (r = 0.88-0.91) (17,18) and between TFM and BMI (r = 0.84-0.97) (19,20). Especially in girls, BMI has been a good indicator of adiposity, because in females a greater fat deposition occurs during the pubertal period (21).…”

“…Additionally, body mass, height, and waist circumference (WC) measurements were taken in a separate room by a trained team using the protocol recommended by Lohman et al 21 Body esteem (total and appearance, weight, and attribution domains) was the dependent variable, whereas BMI and WC were the independent variables, and adolescents' sex and age group were the covariables. The participants were divided into two age groups according to Chiara et al, 22 taking into account the differences in the process of growth, development, and sexual maturation of boys and girls: younger (boys aged 10 to 14; girls aged 10 to 13) and older (boys aged 15 to 18; girls aged 14 to 18) age groups.…”
