Show more

“…Angle Class II, Division 1 malocclusion is highly prevalent among Brazilian children, affecting 55% of patients with malocclusion. 1 It is characterized by lack of sagittal harmony between the basal bones due to maxillary prognathism and mandibular retrognathia, either in isolation or in combination, being the mandibular retrognathism one of the major causes of this malocclusion. 23,26 In recent decades, many researchers began to develop fixed intraoral orthopedic appliances to correct Class II malocclusion caused by mandibular retrognathism.…”

“…This appliance is considered functional because it modifies the posture of the mandible in relation to the maxilla 18 , potentiates mandibular growth and restricts maxillary development 19 , in addition to being inexpensive, space-saving, and of easy preparation 20 . Satisfactory results have been observed with its utilization in Angle Class II, Division 1 malocclusions 21 . In this study, patients using other treatment strategies were excluded to avoid interference of this variable with analysis of the results.…”

“…In the two-stage correction, the patient (who is in the pre-pubertal growth phase) first goes through the orthopedic/functional phase, and then performs the fixed orthodontic appliance correction to improve the occlusion (Tulloch et al, 1998). To decide which is the best treatment protocol, patient's age, growing stage, occlusal and aesthetic commitment, must be considered (Renata Rodrigues de Almeida-Pedrin, 2005).…”
