Fluorescent amplified fragment length polymorphism (fAFLP) analyses and genetic diversity in Litopenaeus vannamei (Penaeidae)

Abstract: The Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (Penaeidae), represents about 95% of all Brazilian shrimp production. The Brazilian L. vannamei foundation broodstock was made up of specimens collected from different American Pacific sites, but little information was collected on the genetic structure of the broodstock. We used the fluorescence amplified fragment length polymorphism (fAFLP) method to study the genetic diversity of L. vannamei broodstock lines 03CMF1 and 03CBF1 originally produced by breeder-shri… Show more

“…Printed in Brazil www.sbg.org.br 2004) and Litopenaeus setiferus (Ball and Chapman, 2003) but, however, little is known on the genetics of the Brazilian L. vannamei broodstocks Galetti Jr 2002, 2005;De Francisco and Galetti Jr, 2005;Gonçalves et al, 2005). In the work described in the present paper we used microsatellite analysis to investigate the genetic variation in three consecutive generations (F 5 , F 6 and F 7 ) of a Brazilian closed breeder L. vannamei lineage.…”

“…A Bahia é o terceiro maior produtor de camarão em cativeiro do Brasil, e a região de Canavieiras, no Sul do Estado, possui um número significativo de fazendas de cultivo e é a que mais se destaca nessa atividade. O Litopenaeus vannamei, conhecido como camarão-branco-dopacífico, foi introduzido no Brasil no início dos anos 80 e é, atualmente, a principal espécie de camarão marinho cultivada no país (Gonçalves et al, 2005).…”

“…Conventional AFLP is particularly useful for genomic mapping and genetic fingerprinting and may be used to calculate genetic distances between individual members of a population [13,14]. AFLP has successfully been used in the identification of loci linked to important quantitative traits in penaeid marine shrimps [8].…”
