Association between prostate cancer and schistosomiasis in young patients: a case report and literature review

Abstract: This case report refers to a 47-year old patient with prostate cancer associated with schistosomiasis mansoni, who was submitted to radical prostatectomy. This is the third report published in the literature with respect to this association, and up to the present time it is still not known whether a cause and effect relationship exists between the two pathologies. The association between schistosomiasis and cancer has been well-documented in bladder cancer; however, there are no data yet proving the associatio… Show more

“…4 Some authors have hypothesized a causal relationship between schistosomiasis and carcinoma of the bladder, bowel, kidney and prostate. 5 To data only 17 cases of prostatic adenocarcinoma and concomitant gland schistosomiasis have been described (S. haematobium identified in 11 cases, S. mansoni in five cases and not specified in one case). 1 As an uncommon potential complication of an untreated schistosomiasis, we present a case report of simultaneous prostatic adenocarcinoma and urinary schistosomiasis incidentally diagnosed after a radical prostatectomy in a 62-year--old African man living in a non-endemic area.…”

“…In these regions there is a predominance of squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder, a relatively rare form of cancer in non-endemic regions 29,30 . In China, where colorectal cancer reaches relatively high incidence rates in endemic areas, the association between this type of neoplasia and diffuse colitis due to S. japonicum infection has also been suggested 30,31 . Some isolated case reports describe the association between adenocarcinoma of the prostate and prostate infection by S. haematobium and S. mansoni.…”

“…Some isolated case reports describe the association between adenocarcinoma of the prostate and prostate infection by S. haematobium and S. mansoni. However, the epidemiological relationship between the two conditions remains limited to the few published cases [30][31][32] .…”

“…There are few case reports of prostatic schistosomiasis and adenocarcinoma. Cohen et al, [49] reported three cases in South Africa, in all the three cases, prostate cancer was associated with the presence of multiple ova of S. haematobium. Similarly, Albert et al, [50] also reported a case of prostate cancer with schistosomiasis in a [46] year young old patient.…”
