The aim of this systematic review was to examine the prevalence of burnout-related symptoms in Brazilian schoolteachers who work in public schools. The literature search was conducted using the following databases: PubMed-MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science. Peer-reviewed studies published in English, Spanish, or Portuguese were considered for inclusion. A total of 2106 records were identified through database searching and 7 additional studies were identified through other sources. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 19 studies were included in the systematic review. Burnout syndrome prevalence was assessed through seven distinct questionnaires. Overall, the majority of the studies presented high methodological quality. Brazilian schoolteachers exhibited high levels of emotional exhaustion (21–69%), high or moderate degrees of depersonalization (8–32%), and high levels of personal realization and enthusiasm toward the job (30–90%). From these data, it is possible to infer that Brazilian schoolteachers are, in general, affected by burnout syndrome. However, and, surprisingly, they seem to be motivated and idealistic, as demonstrated by their high levels of personal realization and enthusiasm toward the job (30–90%). This likely favors the implementation of programs designed to avoid or reduce burnout, deal with stress, and enhance teaching quality.

Sintomas osteomusculares e estresse não alteram a qualidade de vida de professores da educação básica

RESUMO Este estudo avaliou a prevalência de sintomas osteomusculares, nível de estresse e qualidade de vida de professores do ensino básico. A amostra foi composta de 298 professores (265 mulheres e 33 homens) da educação infantil e fundamental do município de Caçador, Santa Catarina. Foram avaliados sintomas osteomusculares (Questionário Nórdico de Sintomas Osteomusculares), nível de estresse (Questionário dos Sintomas de Estresse de Lipp) e a qualidade de vida (Questionário WHOQOL-bref). Apresentaram sintomas osteomusculares 48% dos professores e 65% se afastaram das atividades diárias. Manifestaram algum nível de estresse 42% dos professores, principalmente na fase de resistência (73%) e quase-exaustão (19%). Os sintomas psicológicos predominaram sobre os físicos (p<0,05). Os escores médios dos domínios Físico (57,1) e Meio Ambiente (58,2) foram significativamente menores (p<0,001) que os domínios Psicológico (63,8) e Relações Sociais (71,2). O escore da qualidade de vida geral de 62,6 pontos classificou os professores como satisfeitos com a sua qualidade de vida. Em conclusão, a alta prevalência de sintomas osteomusculares e de estresse não altera a qualidade de vida de professores do ensino básico.

The survey was conducted in CPM Alfredo Vianna, located in Juazeiro, Bahia. It was identified that all teachers showed evidence of Burnout, mainly due to high workload and daily stress in the classroom. Since teachers have more service time they are the ones that are closer to developing Burnout syndrome. This result is alarming, as the teachers have no more than 10 years of service and still have many years of work. It is imperative the need for change in the routine of these professionals, as decrease in workload and encouragement for training to decrease the level of tension and stress. At the same time it is important that every teacher look for qualified professionals to assist to prevent the worsening of symptoms, improving quality in their professional performance and their quality of life.
