Workers with work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMDs) have impairments in the body functions and structures, and have difficulty performing daily activities and developing social participation. Environmental factors can act negatively or positively as barriers or facilitators, worsening or improving the health status of people. This study assessed the relationship between health domains, based on components of body functions, activities and participation and environmental factors of non-statutory and statutory workers with WMDS. The negative relationships were stronger between mental and sensory functions and pain and activities/participation and environmental factors of non-statutory workers. The relationships signaled that the more impairments, the more difficulties. Environmental factors such as temperature, vibration and attitudes hindered mental and sensory functions and pain.

Does company compliance with RS-17 influence the characterization of a casual nexus in expert testimony?

Objective: To examine whether company compliance with RS-17 influences the characterization of the casual nexus in physical therapists' expert reports of cumulative trauma disorders in the labor court of Pernambuco, Brazil. Method: The sample was composed of seven physical therapists who provided expert testimony regarding cumulative trauma disorder cases in the labor court of Pernambuco, Brazil. Data collection was performed across two stages. In the first stage, the experts answered a sociodemographic survey and requested the identification numbers of recent cases where expert testimony was provided to characterize the causal nexus. In the second stage, the researchers went to the labor court to collect expert testimony data. These experts indicated that of 75 total cases, 31% (N=23) of the companies fulfilled RS-17, whereas 69% (N=52) did not comply with the law. Results: Among the organizations that complied with legislation, 30% of the analyzed expert testimonies showed a positive causal nexus. However, of the companies that did not comply with RS-17, 71% of the expert testimonies revealed a causal nexus. These results indicate that the breach of the law increases the probability that a causal nexus will be determined by 54.8%. Conclusion: The results showed that failure to comply with RS-17 significantly increases the probability that a causal nexus will be determined in physical therapists' expert testimony of cumulative trauma disorders.

Objetivo: compreender a prática fisioterapêutica na incapacidade para o trabalho na percepção de trabalhadores. Método: trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa que utilizou a entrevista semiestruturada em profundidade com 14 trabalhadores metalúrgicos com incapacidade prolongada para o trabalho em consequência de doenças e/ou acidentes do trabalho, os quais foram selecionados no Centro de Referência em Saúde do Trabalhador (Cerest). Para análise dos dados, foi aplicada a Análise de Enunciação. Resultados: duas categorias emergiram do trabalho de campo: a primeira, práticas fisioterapêuticas na incapacidade para o trabalho, na qual abordaram-se os aspectos alívio das dores e a burocracia da reabilitação; a segunda, reflexões sobre a fisioterapia na incapacidade para o trabalho, em que se abordou a reinserção do trabalhador para o trabalho e para a vida cotidiana. Discutiu-se a necessidade de as ações de fisioterapia ultrapassarem o espaço da atuação assistencial. Conclusões: há necessidade de refletir a respeito das abordagens usadas na reabilitação fisioterapêutica da incapacidade para o trabalho. Para isso, sugere-se discutir mais essa temática na formação acadêmica e nos espaços de educação continuada, sobretudo no que se refere a adotar abordagens biopsicossociais nos processos de avaliação e intervenção fisioterapêutica nas práticas voltadas à incapacidade.
