No Brasil, estudos pioneiros realizados … Show more

“…Water fl uoridation has been supported not only through resolutions approved at health and oral health conferences but also by the Brazilian Ministry of Health and by the main professional entities in Brazil within the fi elds of dentistry and public health. 21 In 1988, fl uoride was added to a brand of toothpaste widely used in Brazil, and by 1989, more than 90% of the products available to consumers were fl uoridated. 8 The use of fl uoride in the water and in toothpaste has been responsible for a signifi cant decline in the levels of dental caries among children and adolescents in Brazil and has been heralded as an important change that may confer a different oral health pattern from that of the present for the coming generations.…”

“…The method, however, requires some care regarding the maintenance and monitoring of adequate levels of fluoride contained in the supply water to which the population has access. In a quantity below that recommended, the ion does not have the desired benefit for caries prevention 6,19 , while high levels increase the risk of developing dental fluorosis, which is the first clinical sign of the toxic effects of fluorine 20 . This pathology occurs due to the exposure of the dental germ during its formation period to high concentrations of fluorine.…”
