Show more

“…Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a widely used method in empirical studies on water use efficiency and water supply efficiency. This method has also been used to calculate the water use efficiency in Canada [6], Kenya [7], the United States [8,9], Australia [10], Europe [11], and India [12][13][14]. Regarding studies on China, Ren et al [15] analyzed water use efficiency using a two-stage DEA method.…”

“…Even so, it is prudent to expect that if there is an improvement in the provision of these services, there will be a reduction in hospitalizations caused by parasitic-infectious diseases. Scaratti, Michelon and Scaratti (2013) evaluated the management of municipal water supply and sewage services efficiency with an expanded view on the topic. The authors listed the sector's efficiency indicators from the customers perspective (final consumer of services), the market (supply and demand for water and sewage), product and service compliance (water quality and sewage treatment level) and business performance (total expenditure on exploration, personnel, repairs and revenue).…”

“…The difficulty in providing public sanitation services, in terms of access and quality, are governance challenges to be overcome in the next two decades, as highlighted by several authors [ 9 , 16 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 ]. Studies in the field reveal a growing preoccupation in better understanding the causes and consequences of efficiency problems in the use of infrastructure, human, and financial resources in this sector, in order to boost development and competitiveness between agencies and sanitation companies.…”

“…Studies concerning Brazil on the subject are also found in the literature, where a concentration of the use of the conventional DEA approach is identified from a methodological point of view. The results of this approach, however, are sensitive to the choice of resources and products [ 18 , 22 , 24 , 25 , 31 , 32 ], previous studies have limitations of approach in estimating the efficiency of basic sanitation. Firstly, national and international studies are limited to samples of BSUs by arbitrary criteria of quantity of observations and types of BSU (public, private, regional, local, integrated or not, etc.…”
