Background: Current and future generations of nurses must be prepared to communicate and properly care for deaf patients. The objective of this study is to describe how Brazilian Sign Language is taught in undergraduate Nursing courses. Method: This was a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, performed with fifteen professors from four universities, two public and two private and in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, through individual interviews with an analysis procedure guided by Content Analysis. Results: The teaching is restricted to the adoption of planned and established approaches to sign language and procedures to assess theoretical contents and practical domains sign language teaching exclusively in elective course often offered through the online platform. Conclusion: We conclude that professors are not prepared for the teaching of sign language and that curricula need to be appropriate to the demand of full and indistinct assistance to the population's needs.

RESUMONeste artigo, objetivamos conhecer a percepção e sentimentos dos profissionais de saúde sobre as barreiras no processo de comunicação com os pacientes com deficiência auditiva. Trata-se de uma pesquisa descritiva, de natureza qualitativa realizada com 198 profissionais que compõem a equipe de enfermagem das unidades básicas de saúde, unidade saúde da família, postos de saúde e pronto atendimento municipal, de um município da região noroeste do estado do Paraná, os dados foram analisados com a utilização do software QDA Miner 3.2. Os resultados demonstram que (53,40%) dos profissionais de saúde referem sentimentos negativos sobre o atendimento proporcionado aos pacientes surdos, 60,10% descreveram que o atendimento oferecido é realizado com dificuldade, devido à falta de preparo (8,70%), sendo que essa barreira influencia diretamente no atendimento ofertado, e que na percepção de 7,20% dos profissionais o atendimento foi inadequado. Os resultados permitem afirmar que os profissionais de saúde relatam sentimentos negativos como incapacidade, impotência, insegurança, constrangimento, e apresentaram-se despreparados para o atendimento, comprometendo a assistência a saúde. Sugere-se a inclusão de processo permanente de qualificação dos profissionais para os surdos possam receber um atendimento de qualidade nos serviços de saúde. Palavras-chave:Inclusão. Comunicação. ABSTRACTIn this article, we aim to know the perception and feelings of the health professionals about the barriers in the process of communication with the hearing impaired patients. This isa descriptive research of a qualitative nature carried out with 198 professionals who make up the nursing team of the basic health units, family health unit, health posts and ready municipal care, of a municipality in the northwestern region of the state of Paraná , The data were analyzed using QDA Miner 3.2 software. The results show that (53.40%) of health professionals report negative feelings about the care provided to deaf patients, 60.10% described that the offered service is difficult due to lack of preparation (8.70%), , Being that this barrier directly influences the offered service, and that in the perception of 7.20% of the professionals the attendance was inadequate. The results allow us to affirm that health professionals report negative feelings such as incapacity, impotence, insecurity, embarrassment, and presented themselves unprepared for care, compromising health care. It is suggested the inclusion of a permanent process of qualification of the professionals for the deaf to receive a quality care in the health services.

Objective: to identify how professionals from the local public physical rehabilitation unit communicate with deaf peopleseeking specialized care. Methods: exploratory descriptive study with qualitative approach conducted with 32 professionalsworking in physical rehabilitation through self-reporting instrument. Results: two thematic categories emerged from dataanalysis: Using the Brazilian Sign Language, and Improvising communication strategies to interact with deaf patients. Whenprofessionals improvise strategies to communicate with the deaf, it might create barriers that negatively affect the qualityof services provided to this population. Conclusion: communication is inefficient, and effective initiatives focused on thequalification of professionals working in rehabilitation can contribute for them to master the Brazilian Sign Language,ensuring adequate care to deaf clients/patients, in the same way as those provided to people without hearing impairment.
