OBJETIVO: Descrever alterações de fala em escolares de 1ª a 4ª série e investigar a existência de associação entre essas alterações e os distúrbios de motricidade orofacial (MO) e de processamento auditivo. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal com amostra aleatória e estratificada composta por 288 escolares, calculada com base num universo de 1.189 crianças matriculadas em escolas públicas da área de abrangência de um centro de saúde de Belo Horizonte. A idade mediana foi de 8,9 anos, sendo 49,7% meninos. Foram utilizados: protocolo de MO adaptado do Roteiro para Avaliação Miofuncional; prova de Fonologia do Teste de Linguagem Infantil ABFW; e avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo. Os dados foram analisados estatisticamente. RESULTADOS: Das crianças avaliadas, 31,9% apresentaram alteração de fala. Destas, 18% apresentaram desvio fonético, 9,7% desvio fonológico e 4,2% fonético e fonológico. Observou-se variação linguística na fala de 38,5% das crianças. Houve maior proporção de crianças com desvio fonético isolado na 1ª série e de crianças menores de 8 anos com desvio fonético e fonológico. Verificou-se associação entre desvio fonético e alterações de motricidade orofacial e entre desvio fonológico e alterações de processamento auditivo. CONCLUSÃO: A prevalência de alterações de fala em escolares de 1ª a 4ª série é considerada alta. Além disso, estas são associadas a outras alterações fonoaudiológicas, o que sugere que uma pode ser consequência de outra, apontando para a necessidade de diagnóstico e intervenções precoces.

Effects of sleep deprivation on central auditory processing

BackgroundSleep deprivation is extremely common in contemporary society, and is considered to be a frequent cause of behavioral disorders, mood, alertness, and cognitive performance. Although the impacts of sleep deprivation have been studied extensively in various experimental paradigms, very few studies have addressed the impact of sleep deprivation on central auditory processing (CAP). Therefore, we examined the impact of sleep deprivation on CAP, for which there is sparse information. In the present study, thirty healthy adult volunteers (17 females and 13 males, aged 30.75 ± 7.14 years) were subjected to a pure tone audiometry test, a speech recognition threshold test, a speech recognition task, the Staggered Spondaic Word Test (SSWT), and the Random Gap Detection Test (RGDT). Baseline (BSL) performance was compared to performance after 24 hours of being sleep deprived (24hSD) using the Student’s t test.ResultsMean RGDT score was elevated in the 24hSD condition (8.0 ± 2.9 ms) relative to the BSL condition for the whole cohort (6.4 ± 2.8 ms; p = 0.0005), for males (p = 0.0066), and for females (p = 0.0208). Sleep deprivation reduced SSWT scores for the whole cohort in both ears [(right: BSL, 98.4 % ± 1.8 % vs. SD, 94.2 % ± 6.3 %. p = 0.0005)(left: BSL, 96.7 % ± 3.1 % vs. SD, 92.1 % ± 6.1 %, p < 0.0001)]. These effects were evident within both gender subgroups [(right: males, p = 0.0080; females, p = 0.0143)(left: males, p = 0.0076; females: p = 0.0010).ConclusionSleep deprivation impairs RGDT and SSWT performance. These findings confirm that sleep deprivation has central effects that may impair performance in other areas of life.

Purpose: To perform a descriptive analysis of the performance of patients referred to a public educational institution to take part in the assessment of auditory processing and to correlate the assessment findings to the variables of age and hearing complaints, also to correlate results to behavioral and electrophysiological assessments. Methods: The study included 159 individuals that were referred to the public health system to take part in an assessment of auditory processing. All participants underwent pure-tone audiometry, acoustic immittance measures, behavioral tests of auditory processing, and electrophysiological hearing assessment. Results: The main complaint was learning disability and the tests that presented higher prevalence of abnormal results were temporal processing and dichotic listening tests. In all electrophysiological tests the number of normal results was higher than the altered ones. The proportion of normal and abnormal individuals in behavioral and electrophysiological tests did not differ in relation to gender. There was weak correlation between auditory closure and right ear middle latency responses; between left ear middle latency responses and total middle latency responses; among temporal ordering and electrode effect and P300; between temporal processing and right ear middle latency responses; between dichotic listening and P300 and also between binaural interaction and right and left ears acoustic reflexes. Conclusion: The most frequent complaint among participants of this study was learning disability. Temporal processing and dichotic listening skills showed higher prevalence of alteration in the assessment. Most participants were referred to assessment of auditory processing by the speech-language pathologist. Métodos: O estudo incluiu 159 indivíduos encaminhados pelo sistema público de saúde para avaliação do processamento auditivo. Todos os participantes realizaram audiometria tonal liminar, medidas de imitância acústica, testes comportamentais do processamento auditivo e avaliação eletrofisiológica da audição. Resultados: A principal queixa referida foi a de dificuldade de aprendizagem e os testes que avaliam processamento temporal e escuta dicótica foram os que apresentaram maior prevalência de alteração. Em todos os testes eletrofisiológicos, o número de resultados normais foi superior aos alterados. A proporção de indivíduos normais e alterados, nos testes comportamentais e eletrofisiológicos, não diferiu em relação ao gênero. ...
