Electrical conductivity and soybean seedling emergence

Abstract: Evaluation of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] seeds vigor and its relation with field seedling emergence can provide secure indicatives of seed physiological potential. The present research studied the relationship between the electrical conductivity test and the seedling emergence of soybean in field and laboratory. The field experiment was sown in November 26 th , December 3 td and 10 th , 2000. Laboratory tests were performed using levels of water potential in the substrate (soil) -0.03; -0.2; -0.4; and … Show more

“…In our study, the results of EC test significantly correlated with field emergence of soybean. Similar findings were observed in legumes by Colete et al (2004) and Vieira et al (2004) in soybean, Panobianco et al (2007) and Atak et al (2008) in pea, Makkawi et al (1999) in lentil, Silva et al (2013) in common bean. They noted that the EC was clearly related to germination and emergence percentage, and lower emergence was observed in seeds with higher EC.…”

“…Colete et al (2004) and Vieira et al (2004) reported that electrical conductivity (EC) may be efficient to determine seed vigor in soybean while Salinas et al (2010) the minimum 19 hours must require for the stable EC results in soybean. Marcos-Filho et al (2001) found the accelerated ageing and controlled deterioration tests could be used to select vigorous seed lots in soybean.…”

“…EC test results have demonstrated a desirable efficiency to indicate seed performance to establish the stand under a wide range of field conditions, as reported for soybean seeds (Colete et al, 2004;, as well as an important vigor test for this specie (Vieira et al, 1999a(Vieira et al, , 1999b. Gotardo et al (2001) also showed that this test can be used to assess corn seed vigor.…”

“…A similar result was reported in conditioned lettuce seeds. According to the authors, the electrical conductivity test can be useful in the evaluation of conditioned seeds, but it only indicated an increase in seed vigor of the conditioned seeds compared with those of the control treatment (Colete et al, 2004;Rodrigues et al, 2012).…”
