-An experiment was conducted to define a protocol to determine metabolizable nutrient and energy values of diets. The metabolizability (M) was calculated of the dry matter (DM); crude protein (CP); gross energy (GE) and AME n of a single diet. Eighty-one 21-day old (d) male birds were used. The tested methodologies were: Cr 2 O 3 (0.5%) as an indicator (partial collection) or Fe 2 O 3 (1%) as a marker; fasting (0, 4, 6 and 8 h) prior to excreta collection and at the end of the feeding period on the last day of collection (total collection). The excreta collection periods were also tested (3 and 5 days).Twenty 31-day old male broilers from the same group of birds were used to assess the effect of fasting on digestive organ weight. At the end of fasting the digestive organs were removed and weighed. Metabolism coefficients and energy were not different between 3 and 5 days of total collection. CPM was lower for marker utilization and 3 days excreta collection compared to the total collection. Eight hours fasting resulted in significantly lower CPM compared to the other periods or the no fasting. With the methodology of partial collection with 5 days of collection, the lowest values were observed for all the responses, compared to the 3 day collection period. The use of the total collection methodology produced the highest DMM and CPM compared to partial collection. No influence of fasting was observed on the digestive organ sizes, indicating that until 8 hours of fasting no changes were observed in either relative or absolute organ weight. However, the relative jejunum weight of birds submitted to 4 hours fasting was higher than that of birds under no fasting. Total collection, during a 3 day period, without fasting and marker use, is the best methodology for ingredient and feed evaluation of growing birds.Key Words: chromic oxide, excreta collection, fasting, ferric oxide, metabolizable energy organ size Estudo de variações metodológicas na determinação do metabolismo aparente de nutrientes em frangos de corte RESUMO -Realizou-se um ensaio com frangos de corte para a definição de um protocolo de determinação da metabolizabilidade dos nutrientes e da energia da dieta. Foram estimados os coeficientes de metabolizabilidade de matéria seca (MS), proteína bruta (PB), energia bruta (EB) e a energia metabolizável aparente corrigida para nitrogênio (EMA n )de uma mesma dieta, utilizando-se 81 aves, de 21 dias de idade. As metodologias testadas foram as seguintes: utilização de 0,5% de Cr 2 O 3 como indicador (coleta parcial) ou 1% de Fe 2 O 3 como marcador e aplicação ou não de jejum (0, 4, 6 e 8 horas)pré-início de coleta e após a última refeição, no último dia de coleta (coletas totais). Períodos de coleta de três ou cinco dias também foram testados. Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da suplementação da dieta com os probióticos Lactobacillus plantarum e Saccharomyces cerevisiae, no desempenho zootécnico, digestibilidade e na resistência à infecção por patógeno, em alevinos de tilápia-do-nilo. Foram realizados três ensaios. No primeiro, durante 55 dias, seis grupos de 30 alevinos (2,4±0,5 g) receberam suplementação com probióticos, e outros três grupos não receberam suplementação. No final desse período, no segundo ensaio, os peixes foram desafiados com Aeromonas hydrophila, e a sobrevivência foi avaliada por 96 horas. No terceiro ensaio, com oito peixes por tanque (230,0±10,0 g), avaliou-se a digestibilidade da dieta após a suplementação com os probióticos. A suplementação probiótica melhora significativamente o ganho de peso, a conversão alimentar, as taxas de retenção proteica e energética, assim como a resistência dos animais a Aeromonas hydrophila, após a infecção. Growth, digestibility and resistance to pathogen infection in Nile tilapia fed with probioticsAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation with probiotics Lactobacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae on the performance, resistance to pathogen infection and digestibility in Nile tilapia fingerlings. Three trials were performed. In the first one, six groups of 30 fingerlings (2.4±0.5 g) received supplementation with probiotics during 55 days, and other three groups received no supplementation. At the end of this period, in the second trial, fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila, and survival was assessed over 96 hours. In the third trial, with eight fish per tank (230,0±10,0 g), diet digestibility after the probiotic supplementation was evaluated. Supplementation with probiotics significantly improves weight gain, feed conversion, and protein and energy retention rates, as well as the resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila after infection. Supplementation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to the diet of Nile tilapia significantly improves the digestibility of protein, energy, and dry matter.

RESUMOAvaliaram-se os efeitos da suplementação de dois tipos de probióticos para cães filhotes, que receberam dois tipos de dieta -de alta e de baixa qualidade -, sobre a digestibilidade dos nutrientes, escore fecal e parâmetros sanguíneos. Foram utilizados 18 animais, distribuídos em três tratamentos. No tratamento 1, controle, os cães receberam somente a ração; no tratamento 2, ração com probiótico 1 (Bifidobacterium) e, no tratamento 3, ração com probiótico 2 (Lactobacillus). O experimento foi dividido em duas fases. Verificaram-se que os valores médios do coeficiente de metabolizabilidade da energia bruta (CMEB) na fase 1, caracterizada pela troca da dieta Super Premium para a dieta Standard, apresentaram resultados significativos (P<0,05), sendo os melhores resultados obtidos nos animais que receberam o probiótico 2. Não houve diferenças significativas (P>0,05) para o escore fecal e para as análises hematológicas.
