The risks associated with academic research are often much lower than those in large-scale process industry operations. While inventories of hazardous materials are lower in the university environment and the number of hazards may be lower, factors such as chemicals used in laboratories and the proximity of researchers to their equipment can equate to a high individual risk for laboratory users. The number of reported laboratory accidents resulting in fatalities, serious injuries, and financial loss demonstrates a need for better risk management practices in academic teaching and experimental research laboratories. Academic and research labs at universities contain various risks, and the associated risks can be significant if not appropriately managed. The misperception that university labs are low risk is partly due to a lack of awareness of the hazards. This paper discusses an approach to applying health and safety practices to chemistry laboratories at a federal university in the interior of Paraná and discusses selected challenges and suggested solutions.

Resumo: São notáveis, ainda que insuficientes, os esforços empreendidos por pesquisadores, visando compreender a dinâmica relacionada ao processo de prevenção de acidentes de trabalho. A incidência de tais eventos implica Abstract:The efforts made by researchers to understand the dynamics of work-related accident prevention are remarkable but not enough to exhaust the subject. The occurrence of such events implies significant losses for society, organizations and families, in addition to the injured individuals subject to the accident. This kind of phenomenon that still happens in contemporary organizations requires not only a purely mechanistic view but also the understanding of interpersonal relations in the employment context, which refers to the organizational culture. As a quantitative analysis, this study aimed to test a model related to the culture of safety in workplace, present in the literature, in the Brazilian mining industry. Based on the initial results and on the requirements pointed out by a group of security experts in this field, we suggested adjustments in the model and it was re-tested. The results confirmed the model applied in this study and they indicated that factors related to the culture of safety in this specific environment are organizational learning, information and commitment.

In the world, on process of petroleum refining industries, several catastrophic accidents occur constantly, resulting from processing with highly toxic substances, which ends up causing environmental impacts and destroying lives. The explosion, is the type of increased accident that most causes immediate deaths, leading companies to pay damages and rebuild their destroyed assets again. So, the objective of this work is to demonstrate the use of virtual simulations to identify and quantify the possible effects of physical effects and explosion damages, resulting from the Petroleum Refining process operation of the diesel hydrotreatment unit, Abreu e Lima Refinery (ALR or RNEST in Brazil, country of Latin American), a city located in northeastern Brazil. Simulations were performed with the Aloha software in three pipes of the ALR.
