BackgroundWild plants are used as food for human populations where people still depend on natural resources to survive. This study aimed at identifying wild plants and edible uses known in four rural communities of the Pantanal-Brazil, estimating the use value and understanding how distance to the urban areas, gender, age and number of different environments available in the vicinity can influence the knowledge and use of these plants by local people.MethodsData on edible plants with known uses by communities were obtained through semi-structured interviews. A form with standardized information was used for all communities in order to obtain comparable data for analysis. For the quantitative analysis of the factors that could influence the number of species known by the population, a generalized linear model (GLM) was conducted using a negative binomial distribution as the data consisted of counts (number of citations).ResultsA total of 54 wild species were identified with food uses, included in 44 genera and 30 families of angiosperms. Besides food use, the species are also known as medicine, bait, construction, technology and other. The species with the highest use value was Acrocomia aculeata. Older people, aged more than 60 years, and those living in more remote communities farther from cities know more wild edible plants. Statistical analysis showed no difference regarding gender or number of vegetation types available in the vicinity and the number of plants known by locals.ConclusionThis study indicated more knowledge retained in communities more distant from the urban area, indifference in distribution of knowledge between genders and the higher cultural competence of elderly people in respect to knowledge of wild edible botanicals.

Structure of aquatic vegetation of a large lake, western border of the Brazilian Pantanal

Studies on Neotropical aquatic macrophytes have increased in recent decades, however species richness in wetlands of South America is far from being fully known. In addition, studies having an ecological approach are scarce in the Pantanal. Rapid assessments are essential for gaining knowledge of the biodiversity in the region. This study was performed in five sites of the Baía do Castelo, the western border of the Brazilian Pantanal, which included wild-rice patches, floating mats and floating meadows. At each site, plots of 0.5 × 0.5 m were set (n = 137), species of aquatic macrophytes were identified, their coverage was measured and the plot depth was estimated. We recorded 57 species in 26 families, of which Poaceae was the richest. The most frequent and abundant species was Commelina schomburgkiana; the second most frequent was Oryza latifolia,followed by Leersia hexandra, Enydra radicans and Pityrogramma calomelanos. The latter species was second in cover, followed by Pontederia rotundifolia, Eichhornia azurea, E. crassipes and Enydra radicans. These five species and C. schomburgkiana (the most abundant) together represent more than half of the coverage on the lake. Pontederia rotundifolia, Ludwigia helminthorrhiza, Pistia stratiotes, E. azurea, E. crassipes, Enydra radicans and Panicum elephantipes were strongly associated with deeper areas, while Oryza latifolia, Leersia hexandra and Salvinia auriculata were prevalent in shallow areas. Pityrogramma calomelanos, Ludwigia nervosa, Ipomoea alba, Cayaponia podantha, Polygonum acuminatum, Rhynchanthera novemnervia and Ludwigia leptocarpa were highly correlated with floating meadows. The structure of the habitat, natural dynamics and zonation of aquatic vegetation in the Baía do Castelo seems to be influenced by a variation in water levels, which promotes spatial segregation, most likely due to competition and/habitat preference.Keywords: aquatic macrophyte, Upper Paraguay basin, phytosociology, Pontederiaceae, wetland. The phenology of macrophytes in response to environmental stressing factors is easily evidenced in wetlands under seasonal floods, such as the Pantanal. In these environments, the survival and establishment of seedlings of aquatic plants are restricted, limited to episodes with the presence of water, resulting in posterior sexual propagation for dispersal of seeds adapted to hydrochory, overcoming the dry period dormant in the sediment. We described the reproductive phenology of the macrophyte community in relation to the phases of flooding and between the species life forms. We sampled monthly the phenology of the macrophyte community of twenty ponds in the Pantanal, during two years, during the four phases of the flood pulse: 'drought', 'rising', 'flood' and 'receding'. The peak of flowering and fruiting in species of community occurred at the begin of rising, under the influence of the water depth variation on flowering. The species with different life forms develop flowers and fruits in the phases with water (flooded). Amphibious species present wider phenological amplitude, flowering also in the drought phase. There is a correlation between the species flowering in the community and the water depth in the ponds, not observed when considering the life forms of the species. There is a correlation between flowering of amphibious plants and temperature, and rainfall; and a correlation between flowering rooted floating plants and temperature. The macrophyte community presents phenology associated to seasonal alterations of the flooding cycle, such as the presence and depth of water, by means of the diversified life histories and life forms, determining the dynamics, resistance and resilience of this flora in the Pantanal.
