Introduction: Cuiaba presents a huge number of cases of dengue in the endemic periods as well as in the cyclical epidemics. The aim of the study was to analyze the intra-urban differentials of the incidence in 2007 and 2008 relating them with socio--economical and environmental life conditions. Method: study of ecological approach using secondary data. The characterization of the life conditions was gotten from the Demographic Census (IBGE, 2000) and the epidemiologic data from the Surveillance National System (SINAN). The socio-economical index was based on school level and income of the head of family and overcrowding; the socioambiental index used information about sanitation and proportion of precarious domiciles. The variables were classified in quintis and points were attributed for each one. The score for neighborhood was resultant of the addition of the points for each variable. The neighborhoods had been classified in stratus of risk from the combination of results of the two indexes. Results: The incidence was lesser in stratus of average and low risk and very high in the stratum of the highest risk but was bigger then expected in the stratum classified at minimum risk indicating dissociation between life conditions and occurrence of the illness. Conclusion: Higher incidences of the dengue fever in Cuiaba in 2007 and 2008 have been observed in places with precarious conditions of sanitation and inhabited by populations with lesser level of income and education level but there is no linear correlation between life conditions and incidence.

Resumo: A cidade do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, apresenta elevado potencial de receptividade para a introdução, disseminação e persistência da transmissão de dengue. A ocupação do município conformou um mosaico heterogêneo e diversificado, com distribuição vetorial diferenciada entre e dentro dos bairros, proporcionando epidemias distintas nesta escala de observação. Este trabalho busca identificar essas epidemias e o padrão de difusão da transmissão do dengue sob a dimensão de tempo e espaço. Foi utilizado um modelo para a identificação de epidemias considerando os anos e meses de pico epidêmico, a distribuição espacial e a permanência das epidemias levando-se em conta o período de janeiro de 2000 a dezembro de 2013. Foram contabilizados 495 picos epidêmicos, e na escala de tempo evidenciou-se maior ocorrência nos meses de março, abril e fevereiro, respectivamente. Alguns bairros parecem apresentar um quadro persistente de incidência de dengue e o comportamento da difusão da doença permite identificar trajetórias e meses oportunos para a intervenção.

Introduction:Dengue is the most widespread arbovirus worldwide. In Paraguay, it reappeared in [1988][1989], with one of the largest epidemic outbreaks occurring in 2011. Objective: To evaluate the performance of the dengue epidemiological surveillance system in Paraguay between 2009 and 2011. Materials and methods:We conducted an ecological study with secondary epidemiological surveillance data. We analyzed notified cases of the disease based on the distribution expected by Benford's law. To this end, we used the first and second digits from the global records stratified by region, season, population density, indicators of housing conditions and heads of cattle. Results: The epidemiological surveillance system performed better during non-epidemic periods and in the states with better housing conditions and fewer heads of cattle. Conclusion: Given that a difference in the performance existed, we recommended that the system remains operating at the same high alert level even during periods when fewer cases are expected. The technology used by the method proposed to monitor the notification of cases is easy to transfer to operational staff. Materiales y métodos. Se hizo un estudio ecológico basado en datos secundarios de la vigilancia epidemiológica. Con base en la distribución esperada según la ley de Benford, se analizaron los casos notificados de la enfermedad; para tal fin, se usaron los primeros y segundos dígitos de los registros globales y estratificados por regiones, estaciones, densidad poblacional, indicadores de las condiciones de la vivienda y número de cabezas de ganado bovino. Resultados.
