Is pertussis actually reemerging? Insights from an individual-based model

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a spatially explicit, individual-based model developed tosimulate the dynamics of pertussis in a small population. With this simulation approach, complex epidemic systems can be built using information on parasite population structure (strain diversity, virulence diversity, etc.)

“…Asymptomatic and mild infections are becoming increasingly studied in mathematical modelling (Codeco and Luz, 2001;Fouchet et al, 2006Fouchet et al, , 2007Grenfell, 2003, 2004;Gomes et al, 2004;Mossong and Muller, 2003). Here, using the example of the rabbit-myxomatosis interaction, we show that attenuated infections can have important consequences for the host population.…”

“…For the sake of simplicity, we have not considered some features of the host-parasite interaction. One is the possibility of recovered individuals becoming re-infected, a feature that is receiving increasing attention (Codeco & Luz 2001;Glass & Grenfell 2003, 2004Mossong & Muller 2003;Gomes et al 2004). In our context, waning of acquired immunity could be a very important factor.…”
