Objective: This study of Terena Indian children less than 10 years old was undertaken in order to compare weight and height in 1995 and 2002 and to evaluate anemia prevalence in 2002.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of the Limão Verde and Córrego Seco tribes, located in Aquidauana, Mato Gosso do Sul, Brazil. The study enrolled all 253 children who were less than 10 years old in 1995 and 244 who were under 10 in 2002. Their nutritional status was evaluated comparing weight and height with the NCHS (National Center for Health Statistics) reference values (Epi-Info version 6.2). Hemoglobin was assayed using a portable photometer.Results: The percentages of children with weight for age deficit (z score < -2 standard deviations) were 4 and 2.9% in 1995 and 2002 respectively. Percentages of weight for height deficits were 3.6 and 0.8% respectively. Percentages of height for age deficits were 15 and 11.1% respectively. The median z scores for weight, age and weight, and height showed a statistically significant increase during the period between 1995 and 2002 in infants. Between 24 and 60 months, there were increments in median z scores for weight for age and height for age. There was no statistically significant decrease in any of the anthropometric indicators, with reference to z scores. The prevalence rates of anemia were 86.1% for infants 6 to 24 months old (n = 43), 50.8% for those 24 to 60 months (n = 65) and 40.7% for children aged 60 to 120 months (n = 59). Conclusion

ResumoEste estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o estado nutricional, incluindo a prevalência de anemia, de crianças Kamaiurá, povo indíge-na do Alto Xingu, Brasil Central. Foram estudadas 112 crianças menores de dez anos de idade em 2000/2001. O perfil do crescimento infantil foi descrito segundo a distribuição dos índices altura/idade e peso/altura expressos em escore-z da população de referência do National Center of Health Statistics -NCHS. Os diagnósticos de déficit de altura e da relação peso/altura e o diagnóstico de obesidade corresponderam, respectivamente, aos valores abaixo de -2 escores-z de altura/idade e peso/altura e aos valores acima de 2 escores-z de peso/altura. O diagnóstico de anemia foi determinado a partir de concentrações de hemoglobina sérica inferiores a 11 g/dl para crianças entre seis meses e cinco anos de idade e inferiores a 11,5 g/dl para as crianças com idade entre cinco e dez anos incompletos, conforme recomendação da OMS. Aproximadamente um terço das crianças apresentou déficit de crescimento, enquanto déficit de peso/altura e obesidade não foram diagnosticados entre elas. A anemia esteve presente em mais da metade das crianças índias estudadas, 15% delas apresentando anemia grave. Há necessidade de implementação de ações que visem a melhoria das condições socioambientais, de saúde e nutrição desse povo indígena.

A cross-sectional survey was carried out in 2003 to investigate the epidemiology of tuberculosis (TB) among the Suruí Indians, Brazilian Amazon. A total of 736 subjects (50.7% females) were examined (80% of the total population). TB suspects underwent standardised evaluation for the presence of signs and/or symptoms of active TB, including chest radiography, PPD skin test, sputum microscopy examination for acid-fast bacilli and mycobacterial culture. A Bacillus Calmette-Guerin vaccine scar was detected in 699 individuals (95.0%). Of all the individuals examined, 120 (16.3%) had undergone previous TB treatment (46.7% females). One hundred and nine individuals were assessed as TB suspects (52.3% females). The survey identified six new cases of TB in the Suruí (three men and three women). Five of the six cases came from only two of the ten villages. Mycobacterium tuberculosis colonies grew from 5 (4.6%) samples (only two of which were also smear-positive) and mycobacteria other than M. tuberculosis were isolated from 14 (12.8%) samples. Diagnosis of TB based exclusively on clinical grounds was established only in the case of a 4-year-old girl. Based on this survey, the prevalence of active TB in the sampled group (N=736) was 815.2 per 100000. This study highlights the urgent need to review and strengthen control strategies directed at indigenous peoples in the country, taking into consideration their social, cultural and environmental differences.
