OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the reproducibility and validity of data on food and beverage intake obtained by means of a telephone-based surveillance system. METHODS:Reproducibility and validity analyses were carried out in two random subsamples (n=112 and n=119, respectively) of the total sample (N=2,024) of adults (≥18 years) studied by the system in 2005 in the municipality of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil. Indicators evaluated included protective factors (daily or almost daily intake of fruit and vegetables) and risk factors (daily or almost daily intake of soft drinks, frequent intake of foods containing saturated animal fat, and abusive intake of alcoholic beverages) for the development of chronic diseases. Reproducibility was studied by comparing the results of the original telephonic interview with those of another interview carried out 7-15 days later. Validity was analyzed by comparing the results of the telephone interview with those of three 24-hour recalls (our gold-standard) carried out up to 5 days following the original interview. RESULTS:The frequency of the studied indicators remained relatively constant between the fi rst and second telephone interviews, with kappa coeffi cients ranging from 0.57 to 0.80, indicating good reproducibility for all indicators. In relation to the gold standard, there was a trend towards overestimating the frequency of intake of protective foods, but of foods associated with increased risk of chronic diseases. Sensitivity and specifi city were high for indicators of consumption of risk-associated foods (close to 80%), and variable in the case of protective foods (42% to 80%). CONCLUSIONS:The evaluation showed evidence of good reproducibility and adequate validity for most indicators employed in the system, which indicates that maintaining this system operational in coming years will provide a useful instrument for evaluating public policies for the promotion of a healthy diet and for control of non-communicable chronic diseases with a dietary component in Brazil.

, Japanese-Brazilian Diabetes Study Group 3 RESUMO Objetivo: Investigar a associação entre consumo de alimentos embutidos e obesidade generalizada, abdominal e generalizada com abdominal em nipo-brasileiros de Bauru, SP. Sujeitos e métodos: Quatrocentos e quarenta e três mulheres e 329 homens nipo-brasileiros não miscigenados (≥ 30 anos) foram avaliados em estudo transversal de base populacional. Para o diagnóstico de obesidade, foram empregados os critérios da Organização Mundial da Saúde para asiáticos. A ingestão de alimentos foi avaliada por meio de questionário de frequência alimentar validado. A ingestão foi estratificada em terços para análise. Resultados: Nos homens, a ingestão de colesterol e alimentos embutidos mostrou-se positivamente associada à obesidade generalizada com abdominal quando o primeiro terço de ingestão foi comparado ao último, após ajustes (OR 2,97; IC95% 1,13-7,78). Em mulheres, somente o grupo das carnes vermelhas associou-se à obesidade geral com abdominal após ajustes (OR 0,47; IC95% 0,96 ABSTRACTObjective: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the consumption of processed meat with overall, abdominal, and overall with abdominal obesity in a Japanese--Brazilian population, which is known to be at cardiometabolic risk. Subjects and methods: A total of 329 men and 443 women aged ≥ 30 years were evaluated in a cross-sectional population-based survey. Diagnosis of overall obesity and abdominal obesity were based on the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for Asians. Food intake was assessed by a validated food frequency questionaire. Results: In men, processed meat intake was positively associated with overall with abdominal obesity (OR 2.97; 95%CI 1.13-7.78) after adjustment. In women, only the red meat group was associated with overall with abdominal obesity after adjustment (OR 0.47,. Conclusion: Our results showed that high intakes of processed meats were associated with overall with abdominal obesity in male Japanese-Brazilians, but not in females. Introduction: HIV-infected children and adolescents treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) regimens that include a protease inhibitor (PI) can show significant improvements in clinical outcomes, nutritional status and quality of life. The study aimed to report nutritional and metabolic alterations for pediatric patients continuously exposed to HAART and for healthy controls for up to 1 year. Methods: Clinical, anthropometric, lipid profile and food intake data were collected prospectively over approximately 12-months for each patient. Results: Fifty-one individuals were studied, of these, 16 were healthy. After 12 months followup, HIV-positive individuals remained below the healthy control group parameters. No change was observed concerning food intake. Triglyceride serum levels were higher in patients using protease inhibitor at the onset of the study , and 136 (63 -271) versus control group: 54.5 (20 -162); p = 0.003], but after twelve months follow-up, only the group using protease inhibitor for up to two months presented higher values [140 (73 -273)
