Abstract: This article analyzes how space is employed in infectious disease epidemiology, with a brief retrospective of the various definitions of space and its implications. Emphasis is given to the theory of natural foci of infectious diseases formulated by 586Cad. Saúde Públ., Rio de Janeiro, 13(4):585-593, out-dez, 1997

“…Studies made by several authors, such as Pessoa (1978), Barreto (1982), Silva (1986Silva ( , 1988Silva ( , 1997, and Barata (2000) suggest that the occurrence, distribution, and maintenance of certain illnesses are associated with the modifications made by man on the natural ecosystems by altering them from their natural to a historical condition and consequently transforming them, according to Coura-Filho (1997), into artificial ecosystems, that is, altered or constructed by human manipulation. This modification/organization results in a complex network of causation/consequence.…”

“…Geographic, biotic, and abiotic factors from the environment in which prehistoric populations lived (biocenosis) and their cultural characteristics can trace models for the predictability and transmission of the parasite fauna in these groups, as done by MARTINSON et al 75 and REINHARD 104 , and are based on models grounded in the theory of natural foci 94,96,121 . These studies are especially applicable to zoonoses, since biocenosis in natural ecosystems is well defined 121 , but they can also be applied to human-specific parasites.…”
