Abstract. In the current study, mycotoxicoses of ruminants and horses are reviewed, with an emphasis on the occurrence of these diseases in South America. The main mycotoxicoses observed in grazing cattle include intoxications by indole-diterpenoid mycotoxins (Paspalum spp. contaminated by Claviceps paspali, Lolium perenne infected by Neotyphodium lolii, Cynodon dactylon infected by Claviceps cynodontis, and Poa huecu), gangrenous ergotism and dysthermic syndrome (hyperthermia) caused by Festuca arundinacea (syn. Festuca elatior) infected by Neotyphodium coenophialum (syn. Acremonium coenophialum), and photosensitization in pastures contaminated by toxigenic Pithomyces chartarum. Other mycotoxicoses in grazing cattle include slaframine toxicity in clover pastures infected by Rhizoctonia leguminicola and diplodiosis in cattle grazing in corn stubbles. The mycotoxicoses caused by contaminated concentrated food or byproducts in cattle include poisoning by toxins of Aspergillus clavatus, which contaminate barley or sugar beetroot by-products, gangrenous ergotism or dysthermic syndrome caused by wheat bran or wheat screenings contaminated with Claviceps purpurea, and acute respiratory distress caused by damaged sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas). The main mycotoxicosis of horses is leukoencephalomalacia caused by the fumonisins B1 and B2 produced by Fusarium spp. Poisoning by C. purpurea and F. elatior infected by N. coenophialum has also been reported as a cause of agalactia and neonatal mortality in mares. Slaframine toxicosis caused by the ingestion of alfalfa hay contaminated by R. leguminicola has also been reported in horses.

RESUMO.-Descrevem-se os dados epidemiológicos, os sinais clínicos e as lesões de quatro surtos da doença do edema e enfisema pulmonar agudo em bovinos (EEPAB) nos estados de Santa Catarina e Paraná e sua reprodução experimental. A doença espontânea ocorreu após transferência de bovinos de pastagem madura e seca para outra jovem e viçosa. Todos os bovinos afetados eram vacas das raças holandês e pardo suíço. Os principais sinais clí-nicos foram dispneia e respiração abdominal dificultosa com o pescoço estendido e a boca aberta. Apresentaram, também, enfisema subcutâneo, queda na produção de leite e recuperação lenta ou morte. Os achados de necropsia foram restritos ao pulmão o qual tinha coloração vermelho escuro, não colabado, de aspecto brilhante e hipercriptante com enfisema interlobular acentuado. As lesões histológicas no pulmão consistiam principalmente de enfisema alveolar e interlobular intercalado por áre-as de congestão e edema, degeneração hialina da parede dos alvéolos e infiltrado de macrófagos e eosinófilos, moderado, difuso. A reprodução experimental da doença foi realizada em um bovino, com administração de 0,7mg/ kg de peso corporal de L-triptofano por via oral em dose única. O animal morreu no sétimo dia de experimento. Os sinais clínicos e lesões foram idênticos aos observados na doença espontânea. The paper reports the epidemiological data, clinical signs and lesions of four outbreaks of acute pulmonary edema and emphysema in cattle (ABPE) which occurred in the states of Parana and Santa Catarina, as well as its experimental reproduction. The spontaneous disease occurred after the cattle was transferred from a mature and dry pasture to another luxurious sprouting one. All affected animals were adult dairy cows of Holstein and Brown Swiss breed. The main clinical signs were dyspnea of laborious abdominal breathing with extended neck and open mouth.The sick animals also presented subcutaneous emphysema, decreased milk production, slow recovery or death. Postmortem findings were restricted to a dark red not collapsed lung, which was shiny and hyper sizzling more than usual and with marked interlobular emphysema. Histological lesions in the lung consisted of alveolar and interlobular emphysema, areas with congestion and edema, hyaline degeneration of the alveolus wall and moderate diffuse infiltration of macrophages and eosinophils. The experimental reproduction of the disease was performed in a cow by orally administration of 0.7mg/kg /LW of L--Tryptophan single dose. The animal died on the seventh day of the experiment. The clinical signs and lesions were similar to those observed in the naturally occurring disease.INDEX TERMS: L-tryptophan, pulmonary edema, pulmonary emphysema, cattle.

ResumoO presente trabalho objetivou verificar a ocorrência de fungos produtores de micotoxinas, especialmente dos gêneros Aspergillus, Fusarium e Penicillium, em granola comercializada em Porto Alegre, uma vez que este alimento vem apresentando crescente consumo. Estes fungos filamentosos são evidenciados freqüentemente em cereais, os quais apresentam grande incidência em produtos à base de granola. Amostras de granola foram adquiridas no Mercado Público de Porto Alegre, no período de agosto de 2004 a abril de 2005, nas quatro estações do ano. A coleta baseou-se em quatro amostras de diferentes procedências, duas das quais são comercializadas embaladas e lacradas e duas comercializadas a granel. As análises seguiram os procedimentos descritos pelo Compendium of Methods for Examination of Foods. A identificação dos fungos baseou-se na morfologia macroscópica e microscópica, com auxílio de chaves de identificação. Os resultados evidenciaram a presença dos três gêneros fúngicos, com predominância de Aspergillus em três estações. No verão houve maior desenvolvimento micelial e no outono, menor crescimento de fungos. Os resultados sugerem maior controle e fiscalização, visando eliminar qualquer ocorrência de microrganismos produtores de toxinas em granola. AbstractThe following work, had the purpose to verify the occurrence of fungi which produce mycotoxin, specially the Aspergillus, Fusarium and Penicillium genus in the granola commercialized in Porto Alegre, once that this food is having an increasing consumption.These fibered fungi are certified frequently in cereals, which are found in the granola (a mix of grains, nuts and dried fruits, sometimes coated with oil and honey, eaten for breakfast or as a snack). Granola samples were acquired in the Public Market of Porto Alegre since August 2004 until April 2005, during the four seasons of the year. The collection was based on four samples of different origins, two of which are commercialized packed and sealed up, and the other two commercialized in bulk. The analyses had followed the described procedures for Compendium of Methods for Examination of Foods. The fungi identification was based on the macroscopic and microscopic morphology, with the assistance of identification keys. The results certified the presence of Aspergillus, Fusarium and Penicillium fungi, with the predominance of the Aspergillus genus in three seasons. In summer it had a bigger mycelium development and in autumn the lowest fungi growth. The results suggest a bigger control and inspection, seeking for eliminate any occurrence of microorganism producer of toxins in the granola. Keywords: mycotoxins; food; pathogenicity; food security.
