Castor bean seeds are the raw material used for extracting oil destined to pharmaceutical and industrial ends. The appropriate application of post-harvest technologies, such as processing, is required to ensure the production of top quality seeds. Thus, this study aimed at assessing the physiological quality of seeds from two castor bean genotypes, classified according to their specific mass and size. Castor seeds of the genotypes EVF102 and EVF103 were mechanically harvested and then classified with the aid of cylindrical sieves and a densimetric table. This procedure was conducted at the processing unit of the company Sementes Goiás LTDA [Goiás Seeds Co.]. Evaluations of seed physiological quality were carried out in the Seed Laboratory of Instituto Federal Goiano, following a completely randomized design. The testing was conducted in four replicates, in a 2 x 2 x 5 factorial scheme (two genotypes x two sizes x five specific masses). The following parameters were appraised: (a) mass of one thousand seeds; (b) germination; (c) germination speed index; (d) emergence test; (e) emergence speed index; (f) electrical conductivity; and (g) accelerated aging. Genotype EVF102 seeds sized 8 mm, as classified by the densimetric table, showed the highest physiological quality, considering the germination, germination speed index, and emergence. Seeds of the genotype EVF103, sorted by size, exhibited no difference in physiological quality.

The percentage germination of seeds from the upper outlets was also high compared to the other classifications, demonstrating the efficiency of the table for cleaning castor bean seeds.…”

Seed cleaning improves lot quality but little is known about the effects of upgrading castor bean seed lots on a densimetric Uso da mesa densimétrica na melhoria da qualidade de sementes comerciais de mamona RESUMO -O uso de bagas de mamona para a produção de biodiesel já é realidade, entretanto, a obtenção de sementes de qualidade ainda é um desafio. O beneficiamento de sementes é uma etapa da produção que visa aprimorar a qualidade do lote, no entanto, pouco se conhece sobre os efeitos do aprimoramento de lotes de sementes de mamona em mesa densimétrica. O trabalho foi realizado com objetivo de avaliar a influência do beneficiamento de lotes de sementes de mamona em mesa densimétrica nos seus atributos físicos, fisiológicos e sanitários. Foram utilizados dois lotes comerciais da cultivar AL Guarany 2002 estratificados em cinco categorias de acordo com sua classificação em mesa densimétrica (alimentação e descargas inferior, inferior intermediária, superior intermediária e superior). Avaliaram-se: rendimento, peso de mil sementes, germinação, emergência de plântulas, condutividade elétrica e teste de sanidade. A classificação de sementes de mamona em mesa densimétrica melhora a qualidade física, fisiológica e sanitária de lotes comerciais. A resposta fisiológica dos diferentes lotes de sementes de mamona à classificação varia em função de sua densidade inicial. As sementes de mamona classificadas em mesa densimétrica na descarga superior apresentam melhor qualidade física, fisiológica e sanitária em relação àquelas provenientes da descarga inferior.Termos para indexação: Ricinus communis L., beneficiamento, germinação, vigor, sanidade.

Incidence of Fungi in Mombasa Grass Seeds During the Stages of the Seed Conditioning Process

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the seed conditioning process on the sanitary quality of Panicum maximum 'Mombasa' seeds. The seeds were sampled before processing and after exiting the seed blower and sieves (discharge from the top and bottom sieves), first gravity separator (intermediate discharge), seed treatment equipment (dyeing the seeds of the intermediate discharge from the first separator), and second gravity separator (upper, intermediate, and lower discharge). Sanitary analysis was performed by the Blotter Test method with and without surface disinfestation of the seeds, which were incubated at 20 ± 2 °C, with a photoperiod of 12 h, for 7 d. The conditioning process increased the incidence of Fusarium sp. in the Mombasa grass seeds. In addition, Cladosporium sp. and Alternaria sp. were found in and on the surface of the seeds and, therefore, can be disseminated by the seed conditioning machines. The percentage of seeds with Alternaria sp. decreased after dyeing and after the top discharge of the second gravity separator stage.
