Litter corresponds to the layer of decomposing dead organic matter present on the soil surface. This layer is very important for nutrient cycling and contributes with organic matter accumulation in the soil, besides the carbon stock. The objective herein was to quantify the carbon biomass, both content and stock, and map the litter C-stock in the Cerrado biome, which is formed by Savanna Grassland (SG), Cerrado Stricto Sensu (CE) and Forest Savanna (FS), in Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil. The data were collected in 26 fragments in Minas Gerais state, totaling 210 sampling locations. A variographic study was conducted and, for mapping, the ordinary kriging method was used for delimitation of homogeneous zones. It was possible to detect high variability in the carbon biomass, carbon content and C-stock in the Cerrado biome litter in Minas Gerais state. The carbon content presented lower variability, ranging from 40 to 44%, so that it is not responsible for explaining the variability of the litter C-stock. Savanna Grassland and Savanna Forest present, respectively, the lowest and highest C-stocks. C-stock presented a considerable spatial structure dependence, allowing to use the geostatistical procedures for mapping it in the Cerrado biome of the Minas Gerais state. The C-stock kriging map showed good accuracy, allowing to verify that the lowest C-stocks in the litter are found from the center to the northern of the Minas Gerais since the highest air temperatures are also verified in this direction.Index terms: Climate change; Kriging; mapping procedures; accumulated biomass. RESUMOA serrapilheira corresponde à camada de matéria morta em decomposição presente sobre o solo. Esta camada é de grande importância na ciclagem de nutrientes e aporte de matéria orgânica sobre o solo, além de estocar carbono. Objetivou-se quantificar a biomassa, teor e estoque de carbono e espacializar o estoque de C da serrapilheira do Cerrado de Minas Gerais. Os dados foram coletados em 26 fragmentos de Cerrado no Estado de MG, totalizando 335 pontos amostrados em todo estado. Foi realizado o estudo variográfico e, para o mapeamento, utilizou-se a Krigagem, para delimitação de zonas homogêneas. Foi possível detectar alta variabilidade nas características avaliadas, biomassa, teor e estoque de carbono na serrapilheira do Cerrado em Minas Gerais, Brasil. O teor de C foi a característica que apresentou menor variabilidade, com intervalo de 40-44%, de modo que não é um atributo crítico para explicar o estoque de C na serrapilheira. O Campo Cerrado tem o mais baixo estoque de C, e o Cerradão o mais alto. O estoque de C apresenta considerável dependência da estrutura espacial, permitindo o uso de procedimentos geoestatísticos para mapeá-lo no bioma Cerrado do estado de Minas Gerais. -The dry forests are the type most widely distributed vegetation in the tropics, and studies aimed at quantifying the carbon stock in these forests are important for it to be quantified their participation as mitigating the effects of climate change. With that in mind, the aim of this research was to quantify the carbon stocks in the woody, herbaceous, litter and root components of a patch of dry tropical forest, with 30 years of regeneration in Iguatu-CE, Brazil. Initially the vegetation was inventoried by means of a floristic and phytosociological survey of the woody component in a 1 ha area which had been under conservation. The biomass was then estimated employing allometric equations, and the stored carbon was quantified. Stocks of carbon in the litter and the herbaceous plants were determined by monitoring their biomass over 24 months, with subsequent conversion into carbon. Carbon stocks in the roots were estimated as the product of their biomass and carbon concentrations, for this were collected 20 samples at a depth of up to 30 cm deep in the dry and rainy season. It was found that the carbon content varies with the chamber and evaluated by adding carbon stored in woody compartments (19,27 t ha Key words: Semi-arid. Caatinga. Biomass. RESUMO -As florestas secas são amplamente distribuídas nos trópicos, e estudos que visam quantificar o estoque de carbono nessas florestas são importantes para que possa ser quantificada sua participação como mitigadora dos efeitos das mudanças climáticas. Nesse sentido, objetivou-se com essa pesquisa quantificar o estoque de carbono nos componentes: arbustivoarbóreo, herbáceo, serrapilheira e raízes em um fragmento de floresta tropical seca, com 30 anos de regeneração, no município de Iguatú-CE. Inicialmente, realizou-se o inventário da vegetação, através de um levantamento florístico e fitossociológico do componente arbustivo-arbóreo. Posteriormente, estimou-se sua biomassa, empregando-se equações alométricas; em sequencia foi quantificado o carbono estocado. Já o estoque de carbono contido na serrapilheira e nas plantas herbáceas foi determinado através do monitoramento de suas biomassas, durante 24 meses, com posterior conversão dessas para carbono. O estoque de carbono contido nas raízes foi estimado através do produto entre suas biomassas e a concentração de carbono, para isso foram coletadas 20 amostras na camada de até 30 cm de profundidade no período seco e chuvoso, totalizando 40 amostras por ano. O teor de carbono varia de acordo com o compartimento avaliado, e somando-se o carbono estocado nos compartimentos arbustivo-arbóreo (19,27 t ha . RESUMOO estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o estoque mensal e anual de serapilheira e sazonalidade em duas fitofisionomias (Cerrado stricto sensu e Mata de Galeria) e em um povoamento de eucalipto, localizados na Fazenda Água Limpa, DF. O estoque de serapilheira foi coletado mensalmente, pelo período de um ano, com auxílio de um gabarito metálico de 0,25 m 2 . O material foi separado manualmente nas frações folhas, cascas, galhos, raízes, flores/frutos e material particulado. O estoque de serapilheira na Mata de Galeria (9,36 t ha -1 ) foi estatisticamente igual ao observado no povoamento de eucalipto (9,12 t ha -1 ), valores maiores que o verificado no Cerrado Típico (6,08 t ha -1 ). A fração folha apresentou maior quantidade nas fitofisionomias e no povoamento quando comparada às demais frações. Verificaram-se dois padrões divergentes de sazonalidade do estoque de serapilheira: maior estoque no Cerrado Típico e no povoamento de eucalipto na estação seca e maior estoque na Mata de Galeria na estação chuvosa.Palavras-chave: ecologia florestal, senescência foliar, sistemas florestais. Litter Stock in Three Forest Types in Cerrado at Distrito Federal ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to evaluate the monthly and annual litter stock, and the seasonality in two phytophysiognomies (Cerrado stricto sensu and Gallery Forest) and one eucalyptus plantation, located in Fazenda Água Limpa, DF. The litter stock was monthly collected by using a metal jig of 0.25 m 2 , during one year. The material was manually sorted into leaves, bark, twigs, roots, flowers/fruits and particulate matter. There were no significant differences in the litter stock between the Gallery Forest (9.36 t ha -1 ) and the eucalyptus plantation (9.12 t ha -1 ), which were both higher than the Cerrado stricto sensu (6.08 t ha -1 ). The leaf fraction presented a larger amount in the three vegetation types when compared to the other fractions. There were two different patterns of litter stock seasonality: higher litter stock in the Cerrado stricto sensu and eucalyptus plantation in the dry season; and higher stock in Gallery Forest in the rainy season.
