Field work was carried out at four small watershed sited in the Iguatu County, Ceará, Brazil. Litter productions were estimated monthly (May/2007 -Sept/2008) from 20 box of 1,0 m 2 litter collector. The collected litter was fractioned into leaves, reproductive structures, branches and miscellaneous, after that they were dried and weighted. Every three months the deposited litter on the soil was sampled from 0.5 m x 0.5 m frame, dried and weighted. Also, samples soils (0-15 cm) were collected to determine the soil humidity. It was observed two predominant species Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart. and Croton sonderianus Muell.Arg., which represent more than 50% of population Cover vegetation is defi ned by brush wood. The peak of leaf production occurred at the end of rainfall season expressing a strong relation between litter production and rainfall season, while the reproductive structures were defi ned by vegetation specie. In the fi rst year (May/07-April/08) the litter production was. Litter production presents a seasonal behavior registering 2,855.42 kg ha -1 of productivity, with a peak of production immediately after the rainfall season. The decomposition showed as a slow process, since the factor (K) was lower than 1.
-The dry forests are the type most widely distributed vegetation in the tropics, and studies aimed at quantifying the carbon stock in these forests are important for it to be quantified their participation as mitigating the effects of climate change. With that in mind, the aim of this research was to quantify the carbon stocks in the woody, herbaceous, litter and root components of a patch of dry tropical forest, with 30 years of regeneration in Iguatu-CE, Brazil. Initially the vegetation was inventoried by means of a floristic and phytosociological survey of the woody component in a 1 ha area which had been under conservation. The biomass was then estimated employing allometric equations, and the stored carbon was quantified. Stocks of carbon in the litter and the herbaceous plants were determined by monitoring their biomass over 24 months, with subsequent conversion into carbon. Carbon stocks in the roots were estimated as the product of their biomass and carbon concentrations, for this were collected 20 samples at a depth of up to 30 cm deep in the dry and rainy season. It was found that the carbon content varies with the chamber and evaluated by adding carbon stored in woody compartments (19,27 t ha Key words: Semi-arid. Caatinga. Biomass. Caatinga. Biomasa.
RESUMOIn groups 1 and 2, the salinity level of the water was, mainly, due to the geology and the climate of the region. While for group 3 and 4, besides these factors, the water salinity was influenced by human activities. According to the results, the first and the second components (independent factors) explaining, 57.28 and 26.77%, respectively, the total variance of seven variables. The most important parameters related to the variability of the water salinity level were Cl -, CE, Na + and Mg 2+, which were related to salt solubility.
-Water body eutrophication process has been a serious problem around the world, especially in semiarid and arid region where main approach to storage water is reservoir. The aim of this work was to investigate the spatial and seasonal variability in water quality of a reservoir in a semi-arid tropical region with regards to its trophic state, and to identify the sources of nutrient input to the reservoir. This research was developed in the Orós reservoir, the second one most important reservoir in Ceará State, Brazil. Samples were collected bimonthly during the period April 2008 to April 2010, from sex sampling points representing the outlet of tributaries, and one point down of the dam. The study included the following variables: total phosphorus, transparency and chlorophyll-a. O estudo considerou as seguintes variáveis: fósforo total, transparência e a clorofila "a".
