-A study on surface water quality in the Acaraú Basin, in the North of the state of Ceará, Brazil was performed. Qualitative dynamics of water flowing to the Acaraú River that supplies water to the irrigation project in the area was evaluated. Multivariate Factor Analysis/Principal Component Analysis was used for evaluation of water quality in order to develop a water quality index (WQI) that reflects soil salinity and sodicity risks and water toxicity to plants. From April/2003 to September/2005 water were sampled from ten sampling sites covering the basin, where physical and chemical parameters that contribute to the WQI were evaluated. The results showed that the use of water for irrigation in the Acaraú basin, according to the proposed WQI, are potentially prone to cause toxicity (crop cycle) and sodicity problem in the long run, if the soil-water-plant is not carefully monitored.Key words -Water Irrigation. Field work was carried out at four small watershed sited in the Iguatu County, Ceará, Brazil. Litter productions were estimated monthly (May/2007 -Sept/2008) from 20 box of 1,0 m 2 litter collector. The collected litter was fractioned into leaves, reproductive structures, branches and miscellaneous, after that they were dried and weighted. Every three months the deposited litter on the soil was sampled from 0.5 m x 0.5 m frame, dried and weighted. Also, samples soils (0-15 cm) were collected to determine the soil humidity. It was observed two predominant species Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart. and Croton sonderianus Muell.Arg., which represent more than 50% of population Cover vegetation is defi ned by brush wood. The peak of leaf production occurred at the end of rainfall season expressing a strong relation between litter production and rainfall season, while the reproductive structures were defi ned by vegetation specie. In the fi rst year (May/07-April/08) the litter production was. Litter production presents a seasonal behavior registering 2,855.42 kg ha -1 of productivity, with a peak of production immediately after the rainfall season. The decomposition showed as a slow process, since the factor (K) was lower than 1.
BIOPHYSICS VARIABLES SEASONALITY ON SURFACE IN SEMIARID REGIONS BY USING REMOTE SENSING ABSTRACT:To investigate the rainfall regime effects over the albedo, NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index), net radiation and soil heat flux in a semiarid region (Northeast of Brazil), a study in the Trussu watershed was developed by using remote sensing. The study focuses on two images (Landsat 7 ETM+) provided by Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), from October 25, 2000 and July 24, 2001, each of them having a different rainfall regime (dry and wet seasons). The images were analyzed by using the SEBAL algorithm (surface energy balance algorithm for land). The results showed that the amount of rainfall affected the investigated variables, and the highest values of albedo were registered during the dry season. The NDVI presented high sensibility to rainfall regime, pointing out a high vegetation potential recover during the rainfall season. The NDVI along the Trussu River was up to 0.39, expressing the repair zone preservation. The watershed vegetation showed a high resilience power expressed by NDVI values in the year of 2001. Net radiation and soil heat flux were greater in the dry season, in this way expressing the effect of humidity on the energy balance.
ABSTRACT:The state of Ceará is a semiarid region in north-eastern Brazil, having a high spatial and temporal variability of precipitation, which poses challenges for water resources management. The objective of this study is to describe and analyse the long-term variation of monthly precipitation indices and their relation to sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies. Data from 55 weather stations in the state of Ceará from 1974 to 2009 was analysed. In general, a decreasing tendency in monthly precipitation was observed over almost all the state of Ceará. The results point to a tendency for dry months to become dryer and to a decrease in precipitation intensity. SST anomalies from October to March correlate with precipitation indices from January to April, showing decreasing lag times towards the end of the wet season. The most influential SST anomalies locations are Niño 1+2, Niño 3, Niño 3.4 and Global Tropics.
-The dry forests are the type most widely distributed vegetation in the tropics, and studies aimed at quantifying the carbon stock in these forests are important for it to be quantified their participation as mitigating the effects of climate change. With that in mind, the aim of this research was to quantify the carbon stocks in the woody, herbaceous, litter and root components of a patch of dry tropical forest, with 30 years of regeneration in Iguatu-CE, Brazil. Initially the vegetation was inventoried by means of a floristic and phytosociological survey of the woody component in a 1 ha area which had been under conservation. The biomass was then estimated employing allometric equations, and the stored carbon was quantified. Stocks of carbon in the litter and the herbaceous plants were determined by monitoring their biomass over 24 months, with subsequent conversion into carbon. Carbon stocks in the roots were estimated as the product of their biomass and carbon concentrations, for this were collected 20 samples at a depth of up to 30 cm deep in the dry and rainy season. It was found that the carbon content varies with the chamber and evaluated by adding carbon stored in woody compartments (19,27 t ha Key words: Semi-arid. Caatinga. Biomass. Caatinga. Biomasa.
