Translocation of rare populations is regarded as the last resort for the conservation of species whose habitat destruction is imminent. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of two height classes and three leaf reduction intensities on growth and increases in height, stem diameter, survival, and new leaf production in seedlings of Aspidosperma cylindrocarpon (peroba) obtained via rescue seedlings in a remnant of tropical semi deciduous forest. We recovered 240 individuals that were divided into two height classes (Class I-5 to 15cm and Class II-20 to 35cm) and subjected to three leaf reduction intensities (0%, 50%, and 100%), which were then transported to a shade house with 50% light reduction. Measurements of height, stem diameter, and new leaf production were collected 8 times at 0, 15, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, and 135 days, and survival rate was measured at day 135. The average survival rate was 82.9%; 77.5% for one Class I (5-15cm) and 88.3% for Class II (20-35cm). Higher seedling growth was observed for the 0% leaf reduction treatment in both height classes. The leaves insertion were greater in the 100% cuts, with a decrease observed over time. It is advisable to restore A. cylindrocarpon seedlings in two height classes owing to the high survival rate, leaf appearance, and growth reported in the present study. The no-leaf reduction treatment (0%) is the most viable alternative for the production of A. cylindrocarpon seedlings, via rescue seedlings.

ResumoO objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do tamanho da planta resgatada e dos níveis de redução foliar na sobrevivência, crescimento e emissão de folhas em mudas de arnica obtidas via resgate em um remanescente de campo rupestre. Foram resgatados 240 indivíduos, os quais foram divididos em duas classes de altura (Classe I -2,5 a 20 cm e Classe II -25 a 55 cm) e submetidos a três intensidades de redução foliar (0%, 50% e 100%). As medições de altura, diâmetro e emissão de novas folhas foram realizadas em nove tempos (0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105 e 120 dias) e a avaliação da sobrevivência aos 120 dias. A taxa média de sobrevivência foi de 49,2%, sendo maior na Classe I e não apresentando diferença estatística quanto aos três tipos de redução foliar. A emissão de folhas foi maior nos indivíduos que sofreram redução foliar, observando-se uma diminuição ao longo do tempo, ao contrário das mudas com 0% de redução, que tiveram um crescimento linear. Portanto, é aconselhável que o resgate de mudas de arnica seja realizado para plantas com tamanho entre 2,5 e 20 cm, sem necessidade de redução foliar. AbstractEvaluation of the arnica plant rescue as an alternative to conservation and restoration of campo rupestre ecosystems. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of rescued plant size and levels of reduction in leaf survival, growth, and insertion of leaves in seedlings of Arnica obtained via salvage in a remnant of Campo Rupestre. We rescued 240 individuals and these were divided into two classes' height (Class I -2.5 to 20 cm and Class II -25 -55 cm) and subjected to three levels of reduction leaf (0%, 50% and 100%). The measurements of height and diameter and new leaves emission were collected at nine times (0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105 and 120), and evaluation of survival at 120 days. The average survival rate was 49.2%, higher in Class I and had no significant difference regarding the three types of leaf reduction. The emission sheet was higher in subjects experiencing a leaf reduction observing a decrease over time, unlike the seedling with 0% reduction, which increased linearly. Therefore, it is advisable a size between 2.5 and 20 cm for the rescue of arnica seedling plant, without leaf reduction.

RESUMOA utilização de mudas de regeneração natural é uma técnica importante a ser utilizada com espécies com limitações quanto à sua germinação. Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de testar métodos de transplantio para uso de mudas de regeneração natural de Cordia trichotoma. As mudas foram removidas do sub-bosque e sua área foliar foi reduzida com uma tesoura de poda (0, 50 e 100%) e acondicionadas em sacos plásticos em três diferentes incidências de luminosidade (30, 50 e 70%). O crescimento em altura total e diâmetro do coleto foi avaliado após 150 dias. Os dados foram analisados no esquema bifatorial e por teste de médias a 5% de probabilidade no software estatístico R. Não houve interação entre os fatores sombreamento e corte foliar. O diâmetro do coleto não diferiu entre os tratamentos. Mesmo não havendo diferenças entre tratamentos, as maiores médias de altura foram encontradas com 50% de redução da área foliar. O sombreamento a 50 e a 70% proporcionaram resultados superiores em relação à altura das mudas. Estes resultados estão relacionados com a ecologia e fisiologia da espécie, e vêm a contribuir com o processo de produção de mudas, podendo ser uma técnica viável a ser aplicada nesta e em outras espécies florestais. Apesar do corte das folhas em C. trichotoma não exercer influência sobre o crescimento das mudas, recomenda-se a redução de 50% da área foliar. O sombreamento a 55% proporciona melhor crescimento das mudas de C. trichotoma. This word it was made aiming to test transplantings methods for use in seedling of natural regeneration of the Cordia trichotoma. The seedlings were removed the sub-canopy and their leaf area it was reduced with the pruning shear (0, 50 and 100%) and then placed in the plastic bags in three different incidences of luminosities (70, 50 and 30%). The growth in total height and stem diameter was measured after 150 days. The data were analyzed in a bifactorial scheme and by the average test at 5% probability in statistical software R. There was not interaction between factors shading and leaf cutting. The stem diameter did not differ between treatments. Even without differences between treatments, the highest heigth were found with 50% shading and 50% the reduction in leaf area. These results are related with the ecology and physiology of the specie, and comes to contribute to the seedlings production process, can be a viable technique to be applied in this and other forest species.
