Th e Brazilian shrublands area (restinga) is composed of marine coast vegetation on Quaternary sandy plains, where the species composition can vary depending on the surrounding ecosystems. Th e aims of this study were to describe the structure and fl oristic composition of a restinga near the community of Itaúnas, in the northern part of the state of Espírito Santo, to identify any relationships between this restinga and surrounding plant formations, and to determine which are the species that occur preferentially in the coastal forests of Espírito Santo. We sampled woody plants with a diameter at breast height ≥ 2.5 cm, excluding lianas, in 50 plots of 100 m². We selected studies of coastal forests in the states of Espírito Santo and Bahia to prepare a database that would reveal patterns of fl oristic variation among these areas. We used two-way indicator species analysis for the identifi cation of the species that occur preferentially in the coastal forests of Espírito Santo. We identifi ed 114 species belonging to 38 families. Species richness was greatest for Myrtaceae (26 species), followed by Fabaceae (10). Th e Shannon index for the study area was 3.96. Th e estimated total density was 3,330 individuals/ha and basal area was 32.02 m²/ha. Th e highest importance value (IV) was for Protium heptaphyllum (IV, 23.4), indicating that it is characteristic of the Espírito Santo restinga. Th e results of our fl oristic analysis indicate that the species composition of the Itaúnas restinga is infl uenced by the so-called tabuleiro forests (coastal lowland forests on Tertiary deposits), which are most common in northern Espírito Santo. Th is seems to be the main factor responsible for the gradual reduction in fl oristic similarity between the restingas in the north of Espírito Santo and those in the south of the state, each constituting a distinct fl oristic block. In addition, we generated lists of species that occur preferentially in the restinga and tabuleiro forests. Th ose lists could inform decisions regarding environmental restoration programs.

Mussununga, an oligotrophic sandy savanna ecosystem, comprises distinct physiognomies along fi re, water and nutrient availability gradients. Grasslands and woodlands are constrained at the opposite poles of these gradients, with grasslands occurring in areas with poorer soils and higher levels of both water-stress and fi re intensity. According to the stress-dominance hypothesis, one might expect the importance of competition for community assembly to increase from grasslands to woodlands. Assuming conservation of ecological niches within evolutionary lineages, this should increase phylogenetic overdispersion from grasslands towards woodlands. To test this, we calculated phylogenetic diversity and community structure using diff erent null models as well as the phylogenetic signal of life form as a proxy of niche space. All indices indicate phylogenetic clustering for grasslands and phylogenetic overdispersion for woodlands. Considering that most life-forms showed a signifi cant phylogenetic signal, fi ndings indicate that competition and further density dependent factors may play a larger role in community assembly of physiognomies in less harsh positions along the gradient, while environmental fi ltering dominates the harsher positions. Our results indicate that the entire gradient should receive conservation priority in order to guarantee the eff ective conservation of this endangered ecosystem, including its species richness and ecological processes such as community assembly.

Conhecer as características fitofisionômicas da vegetação nativa de uma região é fundamental para o planejamento de políticas públicas e programas de conservação e uso sustentável da vegetação, bem como para tomadas de decisões de cunho social, político, jurídico, econômico e ambiental. A região de atuação da Embrapa Tabuleiros Costeiros abrange 21,95 milhões de hectares em sete estados ao longo da costa atlântica do Nordeste brasileiro. Este trabalho teve como objetivo identificar os biomas e o tipo de vegetação dessa região, de acordo com normas do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE). As informações foram obtidas a partir de dados do IBGE disponibilizados em 2018 e 2019 no formato vetorial, na escala de 1:250.000, e de dados de publicações técnicas e científicas disponíveis em base de dados digitais e em publicações impressas. A Mata Atlântica (63%) e a Caatinga (37%) são os dois biomas presentes na área de estudo. Considerando a vegetação pretérita, as formações vegetais identificadas foram: Floresta com 52,11%; Savana-estépica com 23,05%; Áreas de contato com 14,64%; Áreas de Formações Pioneiras com 4,92%; Savana com 1,37%; Campinarana com 0,02% e áreas indiscriminadas somaram 3,89%. Em 2017, 77% da área de estudo estava antropizada, restando apenas 4,14% de florestas naturais. Considera-se que pesquisas e políticas públicas relacionadas à regularização e fiscalização ambiental devem voltar-se para a preservação dos remanescentes de florestas naturais e a recomposição de florestas nativas em áreas estratégicas dentro dos imóveis rurais do Cadastro Ambiental Rural.
