studied using 100 sampling plots (10 × 10 m) in four transects perpendicular to the coastline. A total of 2,106 trees (dbh ≥ 4.8 cm) were sampled and total basal area was 27.52 m 2 .ha-1 and species diversity (H') was 3.73 nats (67 dead standing trees were not included). Based on decreasing importance values (VI), the following families and species outstanded: Myrtaceae, Sapotaceae, Annonaceae, Bombacaceae, and Meliaceae; Pouteria coelomatica, Myrciaria floribunda, Oxandra nitida, Chrysophyllum lucentifolium and Aspidosperma parvifolium. Forest structure and species composition vary on the gradient from the ocean landward, forming three dissimilar species groups. Some species were found only in one of these groups and species dominance also differed zonally. It is proposed that the studied community is called "non-flooded forest formation" instead of the traditionally "Myrtaceae forest" or "dry forest", since family and species composition do not allow a more detailed classification. -(The structure of shrubby coastal-plain vegetation at Barra de Maricá, Rio de Janeiro -Brazil). The structure of dense shrubby vegetation growing on the beach ridges at Barra de Maricá, Brazil (22°53'S and 42°50'W) was studied using the line intercept method; 398 woody plants over 50 cm tall were sampled in 350 m for a total of 42 species. The most important families of this plant community are Myrtaceae (nine species) and Leguminosae (five species). Myrtaceae was first in number of individuals and importance value. Clusia lanceolata Cambess. (Guttiferae), Maytenus obtusifolia Mart. (Celastraceae), Myrrhinium atropurpureum Schott (Myrtaceae) and the genus Guapira (Nyctaginaceae; three species) had the highest species importance values. Species diversity (H' = 2.84 nats/ind.) is similar to that of other shrubby coastal plain communities in southeastern Brazil, but there are a greater number of rare species (38%).
As 11 formações analisadas apresentaram uma riqueza total de 990 espécies, distribuídas em 141 famílias, sendo Fabaceae (73) FLORISTIC HETEROGENEITY OF PHYTOCENOSES RESTINGA IN RIO DE JANEIRO AND ESPÍRITO SANTO STATES, BRAZIL ABSTRACT -This study aimed to compare the flora of the vegetation formations that compose the Restinga ecosystem in the States of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo, Brazil. The compile data about floristic and phytosociological was carried, using the Jaccard similarity index, in which the interpretations were given by the Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA
Th e Brazilian shrublands area (restinga) is composed of marine coast vegetation on Quaternary sandy plains, where the species composition can vary depending on the surrounding ecosystems. Th e aims of this study were to describe the structure and fl oristic composition of a restinga near the community of Itaúnas, in the northern part of the state of Espírito Santo, to identify any relationships between this restinga and surrounding plant formations, and to determine which are the species that occur preferentially in the coastal forests of Espírito Santo. We sampled woody plants with a diameter at breast height ≥ 2.5 cm, excluding lianas, in 50 plots of 100 m². We selected studies of coastal forests in the states of Espírito Santo and Bahia to prepare a database that would reveal patterns of fl oristic variation among these areas. We used two-way indicator species analysis for the identifi cation of the species that occur preferentially in the coastal forests of Espírito Santo. We identifi ed 114 species belonging to 38 families. Species richness was greatest for Myrtaceae (26 species), followed by Fabaceae (10). Th e Shannon index for the study area was 3.96. Th e estimated total density was 3,330 individuals/ha and basal area was 32.02 m²/ha. Th e highest importance value (IV) was for Protium heptaphyllum (IV, 23.4), indicating that it is characteristic of the Espírito Santo restinga. Th e results of our fl oristic analysis indicate that the species composition of the Itaúnas restinga is infl uenced by the so-called tabuleiro forests (coastal lowland forests on Tertiary deposits), which are most common in northern Espírito Santo. Th is seems to be the main factor responsible for the gradual reduction in fl oristic similarity between the restingas in the north of Espírito Santo and those in the south of the state, each constituting a distinct fl oristic block. In addition, we generated lists of species that occur preferentially in the restinga and tabuleiro forests. Th ose lists could inform decisions regarding environmental restoration programs.
