OBJETIVO: Este estudo pretendeu descrever o perfil do desempenho em leitura oral de escolares do terceiro ao sétimo anos do Ensino Fundamental, com diferentes tipos de textos. MÉTODOS: Participaram do estudo 55 alunos entre sete e 14 anos. Para a análise de leitura, quatro textos foram elaborados previamente pela pesquisadora - um composto de palavras curtas, outro de palavras longas, um sintaticamente simples e um sintaticamente complexo. Os textos foram lidos pelos participantes oralmente e, após uma avaliação dos resultados, os dados foram computados e a análise estatística cabível foi aplicada. RESULTADOS: Houve gradual diminuição de tempo na leitura dos textos por ano escolar, além do aumento dos tempos de leitura no texto contendo palavras longas em relação ao de palavras curtas e no texto sintaticamente complexo em relação ao simples, em todos os anos. Observou-se aumento da taxa de leitura com a evolução da escolaridade, assim como uma taxa de leitura sempre maior no texto constituído de palavras curtas em relação ao de palavras longas e no texto sintaticamente simples em relação ao complexo. Houve, no geral, um aumento do número de palavras lidas corretamente com o aumento da escolaridade. Quanto à compreensão, foi encontrado um nível bastante semelhante de resultados, com um desempenho geral acima de 60% para as respostas às questões. CONCLUSÃO: Para construir instrumentos de avaliação, é essencial cuidar da seleção dos textos para a leitura, em relação tanto aos parâmetros psicolinguísticos, como à demanda cognitiva.

AimThe study aimed to provide information about the concurrent and discriminant validation of the Scale of Evaluation of Reading Competence by the Teacher (EACOL), which is composed of 27 dichotomous items concerning reading aloud (17 items) and reading silently (10 items).SamplesThree samples were used in this validation study. The first was composed of 335 students with an average age of 9.75 years (SD = 1.2) from Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais State), Brazil, where the full spectrum of reading ability was assessed. The second two samples were from São Paulo city (São Paulo State), Brazil, where only children with reading difficulties were recruited. The first São Paulo sample was labeled “SP-screening” and had n = 617, with a mean age of 9.8 years (SD = 1.0), and the other sample was labeled “SP-trial” and had n = 235, with a mean age of 9.15 years (SD = 0.05).MethodsResults were obtained from a latent class analysis LCA, in which two latent groups were obtained as solutions, and were correlated with direct reading measures. Also, students’ scores on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale and on the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire tested the discriminant validation.ResultsLatent groups of readers underlying the EACOL predicted all direct reading measures, while the same latent groups showed no association with behavior and intelligence assessments, giving concurrent and discriminant validity to EACOL, respectively.ConclusionEACOL is a reliable screening tool which can be used by a wide range of professionals for assessing reading skills.

ResumoA Escala da Avaliação da Competência da Leitura pelo Professor (EACOL) foi criada com o objetivo de fornecer uma maneira rápida e de baixo custo para a triagem das difi culdades de aprendizagem dos alunos pelos professores. O presente estudo investiga a concordância entre o desempenho de crianças na leitura em voz alta de palavras isoladas e a avaliação dos professores na EACOL. Foram avaliadas 137 crianças (52% do sexo feminino) cursando do 2º ao 5º ano de escolarização da cidade de Belo Horizonte. Em geral, as correlações entre o desempenho das crianças na leitura de palavras e a EACOL foram moderadas, sendo que a maior concordância de desempenho esteve entre as classifi cações de habilidade mais baixas. Os resultados são promissores, mas apontam para a necessidade de ajustes nos itens da EACOL, a fi m de melhorar a concordância nos níveis mais elevados de habilidade.Palavras-chave: Leitura, heteroavaliação, validade de critério. The present study investigates the correlation between the performance of children in reading single words aloud and their evaluation by the teachers in the EACOL. We evaluated 137 children (52% female) attending the 2nd to the 5th year of schooling in the city of Belo Horizonte. In general, the correlations between children's performance in reading words and EACOL were moderate, and the agreement in performance was better between lower ability classifi cations. The results are promising, but point to the need for adjustments to the items of EACOL in order to improve the agreement in the highest levels of skill.
