The suitability of rubber tree clones to Calacarus heveae was inferred from the life cycle, reproduction and survivorship of this mite. The assays were performed under controlled conditions with leaflets detached from 6-year-old plants. The development of 20 C. heveae individuals on each of the clones GT 1, PB 235 and RRIM 600 was analysed. This experiment was performed four times during periods when C. heveae was abundant in the field: (P1) November-December 2005, (P2) January-February, (P3) March-April and (P4) May-June 2006. Accordingly, the leaflets used in each assay represented the physiological condition of the host plant during each period. This approach allowed us to evaluate the seasonal suitability of rubber tree clones to C. heveae. We observed seasonal differences in the suitability of rubber tree clones to mite attack. The mites reared on the PB235 had a shorter development period, the highest egg production and highest survivorship. This evidence showed that the PB 235 was the most suitable of those tested. We also observed that the leaflets used in the assays during periods P2 and P3 were the most favourable for the development of C. heveae. This finding emphasises the seasonal suitability of rubber tree leaflets. On the other hand, GT 1 showed higher resistance against C. heveae than did RRIM 600 and PB 235, primarily during the period from November to February. This result indicated that use of the GT 1 clone to control the mite might represent an alternative for growers.

Island biogeography and metacommunity theory often use equilibrium assumptions to predict local diversity, yet nonequilibrium dynamics are common in nature. In nonequilibrium communities, local diversity fluctuates through time as the relative importance of colonization and extinction change. Here, we test the prevalence and causes of nonequilibrium dynamics in metacommunities of mites associated with rubber trees distributed over large spatial (>1,000 km) and temporal (>30-60 generations) scales in Brazil. We measured colonization and extinction rates to test species turnover and nonequilibrium dynamics over a growing season. Mite metacommunities exhibited nonequilibrium dynamics for most months of the year, and these dynamics tracked climatic conditions. Monthly shifts in temperature of more than 1°C resulted in nonequilibrium dynamics, as did mean temperatures outside of two critical ranges. Nonequilibrium dynamics were caused by a change in colonization with temperature change and changes in both colonization and extinction with absolute temperature. Species turnover showed different trends; high relative humidity increased both colonization and extinction rates, increasing turnover but not nonequilibrium dynamics. Our study illustrates that testing nonequilibrium dynamics can provide new insights into the drivers of colonization, extinction, and diversity fluctuations in metacommunities.

Resumo Calacarus heveae Feres (Eriophyidae) e Tenuipalpus heveae Baker (Tenuipalpidae) podem causar intenso desfolhamento em plantas de seringueira. Na perspectiva do Manejo Integrado de Pragas, o uso de clones com resistência é uma importante estratégia de controle. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a resistência de clones de seringueira ao ataque desses ácaros em experimento conduzido em Votuporanga (SP). Foram avaliados os clones IAC 301, IAC 330, IAN 4493, OS 22, PB 233, PB 254, PC 96, PC 119, PC 140, PC 141, PM 10 e RRIM 600, totalizando 12 tratamentos e 3 repetições, em delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados. As avaliações populacionais de C. heveae e T. heveae foram realizadas pela contagem em laboratório dos ácaros e exúvias presentes em 6 folíolos por parcela. Os níveis de desfolhamento foram avaliados com uma escala de notas variando de 0 (ausência de desfolhamento) a 5 (desfolhamento total). Os clones IAC 301, PB 254 e PC 119 apresentam resistência por não preferência e/ou antibiose ao ácaro C. heveae.
