The rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex. Adr. de Juss.) Müell. Arg., can be attacked by several mite species. Among the phytophagous ones, Calacarus heveae Feres (Acari: Eriophyidae) can reach high population density levels on the upper surface of mature leaves and rubber trees can lose up to 75% of their leaves one or two months before the natural defoliation. The present work aimed to define a control strategy by evaluating the mite population development in areas treated with the acaricides azocyclotin, sulfur, cyhexatin, spirodiclofen and propargite, during the period from November, 2001 to June, 2002. Others sprays were performed when C. heveae population reached the threshold level of 0.5 mite/cm 2 in each treatment. The acaricides were sprayed with the use of an air blast sprayer for rubber tree with a spray volume of 1.0 liter per plant. All tested products were efficient for C. heveae control, with immediate reduction in the mite population density levels. However, there was a great difference concerning the control period. Two applications of spirodiclofen and propargite were enough to keep the mite population below the level that can cause defoliation throughout the crop season, while four applications were necessary in the treatments with cyhexatin and sulfur. Among tested acaricides, spirodiclofen and propargite allowed higher leaf retention of rubber trees which were measured indirectly by the light intensity under the tree canopies.
VINE CULTIVARS RESISTANCE TO TWOSPOTTED SPIDER MITE Tetranychus urticae Koch IN THE REGION OF JALES, STATE OF SÃO PAULOABSTRACT -In the region of Jales, the vines has been heavily attacked by the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch. The objective of this study was to compare grape cultivars for suitability as hosts of the species. In field experiment at that location, the pest occurrence, over 12 months, was accompanied on fine grape cultivars, Italy and Benitaka, and rustic grape cultivar, Niagara Rosada. In the laboratory, the T. urticae biology was carried out on these three cultivars and in the 'Redimeire'. Twospotted spider mite presented lower fertility and lower survival on Niagara Rosada cultivar indicating the presence of antibiosis resistance mechanisms. In addition, there was a greater attempt to escape in this cultivar, suggesting a resistance for non-preference.
EFFECT OF PAPAYA (Carica papaya L.) CULTIVATED IN A PROTECTED ENVIRONMENT ON THE OCCURRENCE OF PHYTOPHAGOUS MITES AND WHITEFLIESABSTRACT -It was measured the effect of cultivating papaya cultivar "Baixinho de Santa Amália" in a protected environment and in three situations: without shade, and under screen shades of white polyethylene mesh sizes 2 x 2 mm or 2 x 1 mm. It was registered the number of plants with symptoms of recent attacks of the broad mite (Polyphagotarsonemus latus), symptoms and presence of the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) and the presence on leaves of adults or nymphs of whiteflies (Trialeurodes sp., Bemisia tabaci biotype B and a third unidentified species). Whitefly nymph and exuviae numbers were also counted in the laboratory. Cultivation in a protected environment favored the survival and development of the species under study, and some possible reasons for these are discussed along the text. Since cultivating papaya in protected environment can be a good alternative for "papaya ringspot virus" control, which is a restrictive factor for the crop, the development of strategies to control the pests in this condition is necessary for correct recommendation of such measure.
IIProgênies de seringueira com potencial para conferir resistência a ácaros (Calacarus heveae Feres e Tenuipalpus heveae Baker)Rubber tree progenies with potential to confer resistance to the mite (Calacarus periods, 2002/ 2003, 2003/2004 and 2004/2005
Rubber tree clones with resistance to mites AbstractThe rubber tree crop can be attacked by Calacarus heveae Feres (Eriophyidae) and Tenuipalpus heveae Baker (Tenuipalpidae) mites. Among the control options, the use of resistant genetic material can be a good alternative. The objective of this study was to identify clones showing resistance to these mites, and thus contribute to the establishment of management strategies of these pests. The experiments were carried out in the Votuporanga, State of São Paulo, in an area with plants arranged in a randomized block design with four replications. Leaves of the clones IAC 15, IAC 35, IAC 40, IAC 300, IAN 3156, IRCA 111, PB 260, PB 330, PB 28/59 and RRIM 600 were collected monthly for mite counting. The count was conducted in eight leaflets per plot, in two areas of 1 cm 2 per leaflet, on the upper surface for C. heveae and lower surface for T. heveae. The defoliation levels observed were evaluated with a grade scale ranging from 0 (without defoliation) to 4 (above 75%). RRIM 600 clone was used as standard susceptible genotype. Based on the values of average number of mites per cm 2 and defoliation grades, the IAC 15, IAC 40, IAC 300, IAN 3156 and PB 28/59 clones were considered resistant by non preference and/or antibiosis to C. heveae and T. heveae. The IRCA 111 clone was tolerant to C. heveae.
Predator mites associated with the litchi erinose miteAbstract -The objective of this work was to identify predator mites present in lychee plants and to correlate these species population development with the one of the litchi erineum mite, Aceria litchii. The research was carried out in the county of Casa Branca, SP, Brazil, with mature trees of the Bengal variety, with 12 years old. From August 2008 to September 2009, leaves were collected monthly for the evaluation of A. litchii and predatory mites population levels. Registers were made for 6,557 mites of the Phytoseiidae family. The most abundant species was Amblyseius compositus (42.6%), followed by Phytoseius intermedius (31.2%), Euseius concordis (14.1%), Amblyseius herbicolus (8.8%) and Iphiseiodes zuluagai (3.3%). Population development of A. compositus, E. concordis and I. zuluagai was positively correlated with the one of Aceria litchii, indicating a predation relationship.
