The rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex. Adr. de Juss.) Müell. Arg., can be attacked by several mite species. Among the phytophagous ones, Calacarus heveae Feres (Acari: Eriophyidae) can reach high population density levels on the upper surface of mature leaves and rubber trees can lose up to 75% of their leaves one or two months before the natural defoliation. The present work aimed to define a control strategy by evaluating the mite population development in areas treated with the acaricides azocyclotin, sulfur, cyhexatin, spirodiclofen and propargite, during the period from November, 2001 to June, 2002. Others sprays were performed when C. heveae population reached the threshold level of 0.5 mite/cm 2 in each treatment. The acaricides were sprayed with the use of an air blast sprayer for rubber tree with a spray volume of 1.0 liter per plant. All tested products were efficient for C. heveae control, with immediate reduction in the mite population density levels. However, there was a great difference concerning the control period. Two applications of spirodiclofen and propargite were enough to keep the mite population below the level that can cause defoliation throughout the crop season, while four applications were necessary in the treatments with cyhexatin and sulfur. Among tested acaricides, spirodiclofen and propargite allowed higher leaf retention of rubber trees which were measured indirectly by the light intensity under the tree canopies.
Attacks of Calacarus heveae Feres and Tenuipalpus heveaeBaker can cause intense premature defoliation of plants. It is likely that this leaf fall before the natural senescence period results in decreased photosynthetic capacity and, hence, decreased production. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of defoliation caused by mites in rubber tree latex production. The experiment was conducted in Reginópolis, SP, using the clone PB 235, from September 2002 to August 2003, with two treatments: a plot sprayed with pesticides to avoid defoliation and a plot without spraying. The plants were under a 1/2 S d/5 6d/7. 10m/y. ET 3.3 % 4/y tapping system. The production was weighed monthly. Mite samplings were carried out at 7 to 10-day intervals. The defoliation was evaluated by measuring the light intensity under the tree canopy using a luximeter. There was a significant difference on mite occurrence. Mean occurrence of C. heveae, considering all the evaluations, was 0.34 mites/cm 2 in the sprayed area and 0.93 mites/cm 2 in the plot without spraying. For T. heveae, mean occurrence was 0.06 and 1.09 mites/cm 2 , respectively. There was significant difference for both defoliation and production in May, June, July and August. The rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex. Adr. de Juss.) Müell. Arg., can be attacked by the Oidium heveae Steinm fungus and the Calacarus heveae Feres mite, which cause leaf fall in areas of the São Paulo State. This study had as objective the evaluation of the effect of the systemic fungicide fenarimol, in the fungus control and its interference on C. heveae population. Four ways of application were compared: one application during the new leaves growth period (August); one application in January; two applications: one in the new leaves growth period and one in March; four applications during the cycle of the culture. The fungicide reduced the disease symptoms in all the treatments; however mite resurgence was detected. Considering the integrated management of O. heveae and C. heveae the best result was obtained by using two applications of the fungicide.
