A common species of Hepatozoon, namely Hepatozoon didelphydis, that infects neotropical marsupials (such as D. albiventris, D. aurita, D. marsupialis, Philander opossum, and Metachirus nudicaudatus) has already been described in French Guiana (THOISY et al, 2000), Colombia (AYALA et al, 1973), and Brazil (SILVA & ARANTES, 1916).
