Worldwide, oak species are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss, pathogens, and changing fire regimes. Ex situ conservation through tissue culture may protect the remaining genetic diversity of Quercus dumosa, or the coastal sage scrub oak, from further loss. We designed three basal salt formulations based on the mineral composition of shoot tips and first leaves from mature Q. dumosa and explored carbohydrate source, stress-mitigating compounds, and plant growth regulator concentrations to develop a method of cultivating many Q. dumosa culture lines in vitro. All three novel basal salt formulations led to decreased necrosis compared with commercial basal salt formulas WPM, MS, and DKW. Substitution of 30 g L−1 sucrose with glucose and adding 250 mg L−1 ascorbic acid, 5.2 mg L−1 SNP sodium nitroprusside, and 103 mg L−1 y-aminobutyric acid improved culture health overall. In an experiment involving 115 culture lines, 0.66 mg L−1 6-benzylaminopurine produced the highest average shoots per explant, but 0.33 mg L−1 produced the greatest proportion of shoots 2 cm or greater. Incubation for 24 h in 20 mg L−1 indole-3-butyric acid led to the most rooting. These methods show promise for the ex situ conservation of many genotypes of endangered Q. dumosa.

-(Floral biology of Manilkara subsericea and Sideroxylon obtusifolium (Sapotaceae) in restinga). Manilkara subsericea (Mart.) Dubard and Sideroxylon obtusifolium (Roem. & Schult.) T.D. Penn. display infl orescences of a fasciculate type, with perfect, nectariferous, odoriferous and hercogamous fl owers. They present protogynic dichogamy and daylight anthesis. The corolla is gamopetalous, with the basal region of the lacinia forming a small tube. The medial lacinia, in both species, curves toward the fl ower axis, forming a type of groove, in which the stamen is lodged. The anthers are versatile, extrorse, and rimose. Pollen grain release is cloud-like, on account of an explosive mechanism upon activation of the lacinia-stamen device. The fl owers were visited by bees, butterfl ies, beetles, fl ies and Thysanoptera, being pollinated by Xylocopa ordinaria and Apis mellifera bees, by the Brachygastra lecheguana wasp and by the Isanthrene incendiaria butterfl y.Key words -explosive release of pollen, fl oral biology, Manilkara subsericea, Sapotaceae, Sideroxylon obtusifolium RESUMO -(Biologia fl oral de Manilkara subsericea e de Sideroxylon obtusifolium (Sapotaceae) em restinga). Manilkara subsericea (Mart.) Dubard e Sideroxylon obtusifolium (Roem. & Schult.) T.D. Penn. apresentam infl orescências fasciculadas, com fl ores perfeitas, nectaríferas, odoríferas e hercogâmicas. Apresentam dicogamia protogínica e antese diurna. A corola é gamopétala, com a região basal dos lacínios formando um pequeno tubo. Os lacínios medianos, em ambas as espécies, curvam-se em direção ao eixo da fl or, formando uma espécie de canaleta, na qual fi ca alojado o estame. As anteras são versáteis, extrorsas e rimosas. A liberação dos grãos de pólen ocorre na forma de nuvem por um mecanismo explosivo proveniente do acionamento do dispositivo lacínio-estame. -(Sexual system and floral biology of Pouteria ramiflora and P. torta (Sapotaceae)). Pouteria ramiflora and P. torta are tree species sympatric in the Cerrado and were studied in the Natural Reserve of Clube Caça e Pesca Itororó (Uberlândia-MG) in order to compare various aspects of their reproductive biology. The phenophases were evaluated weekly and their intensity was quantified. The floral biology, breeding system, sexual system and floral visitors were studied in the field and/or laboratory. In both species, leaf fall occurred in the end of the dry season, leaf flushing between the dry and the rainy season, flowering in the dry season and fruit maturation during the rainy season. They have tubular small greenish flowers, with small amounts of nectar and high pollen viability. They are self-sterile, non-agamospermic and had low fruiting success from natural pollination. P. torta is a hermaphrodite species, with protogynous and hercogamous flowers, while P. ramiflora is morphologically gynomonoecious but functionally unisexual. The apparently low pollen flow and the abortion of young fruits resulted in low fruit set from natural pollinations. Both species are visited by several small insects, including butterflies, moths, flies and bees.Key words -Cerrado, dichogamy, monoecy, pollination, self-incompatibility RESUMO -(Sistema sexual e biologia floral de Pouteria ramiflora e P. torta (Sapotaceae)). Pouteria ramiflora e P. torta são espécies arbóreas, simpátricas no Bioma Cerrado, e foram estudadas da Reserva Ecológica do Clube Caça e Pesca Itororó, Uberlândia-MG com o objetivo de comparar os vários aspectos de sua biologia reprodutiva. As fenofases foram avaliadas semanalmente e quantificadas quanto à intensidade. Os dados de biologia floral, sistema reprodutivo, sistema sexual e visitantes florais foram obtidos no campo e/ou no laboratório. As espécies apresentaram caducifolia no final da seca, brotação na transição da seca para o período chuvoso, floração na seca e maturação dos frutos na época chuvosa. Ambas possuem flores tubulares, pequenas e esverdeadas, nectaríferas e com viabilidade polínica alta. São autoestéreis e não agamospérmicas e apresentaram baixo sucesso de frutificação na polinização aberta. P. torta é hermafrodita, com flores protogínicas e hercogâmicas, enquanto P. ramiflora é morfologicamente ginomonóica e funcionalmente monóica. O fluxo de pólen aparentemente baixo entre as plantas e o aborto de frutos jovens resultaram em um pequeno sucesso de frutificação proveniente das polinizações naturais.
