“…This study showed high results of the prevalence of inadequacy of micronutrients intake, mainly for vitamins E, B6, B9 and for calcium, corroborating the trend found in the literature in other investigations where the ingestion of those, and also of other nutrients, was below the recommendation for age and sex in elderly living in NHs (6,7,17). In the study by Fisberg et al (2013), based on data from the Research of Family Budget (RFB 2008(RFB -2009), the prevalence of inadequacy in the diet of noninstitutionalized Brazilian elderly was similar to the one found in this study (more than 50% for vitamins A, D and E, calcium, magnesium and pyridoxine) (18). Berner et al (2002), evaluating a group of 50 elderly living in one NH, observed ingestion below the recommendation for calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, vitamins D and E, thiamine, folic acid and vitamin B6 (17).…”

“…The Inquérito Nacional de Alimentação (National Dietary Survey) 2008-2009 assessed the dietary habits of older adults in Brazil, and the data showed high prevalence of inadequate intake of vitamins (A, C, D, E, thiamine, and pyridoxine) and minerals (calcium, magnesium, zinc, and copper) [4]. Moreover, 91% of the Brazilian adult population consume inadequate amounts of macronutrients [5], which may increase the risk of chronic diseases.…”

“…The first articles deal with studies developed in the Vale do Ribeira region that applied the weighing method to obtain food consumption data, which showed deficit in intake of vitamin A, calcium, vitamin B 2 , and vitamin C 10 , 40 . In 2013, it published a supplement of articles presenting the results of the first nationwide nutrition survey, conducted in 2008–2009 along with the Family Expenditures Survey, developed by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics 3 , 5 , 8 , 18 , 22 , 65 , 75 . Food consumption studies was the area with the highest number of articles, about 20% of all articles analyzed in this work, with important growth from the mid-1990s (Figure 3).…”

“…The data were published in RSP in a supplement 3 , 5 , 8 , 22 , 65 , 75 . This survey characterized the Brazilian diet of the early 21st century, showing that Brazilians had been combining the staple foods of good nutritional quality (such as rice and beans, which were the items most reported by the population) with foods of low nutritional quality and high energy density.…”
