Background: The potentially harmful consequences of alcohol use among undergraduates have become a growing concern in recent years. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of hazardous use of alcohol in this population and to identify demographic and psychosocial factors associated with this pattern of consumption. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using an anonymous and self-completed questionnaire in the classroom. The questionnaire was administered to 1,290 enrolled male and female students, which comprised a proportional sample of the main areas of knowledge at University of Campinas. The questionnaire produced sociodemographic and psychosocial profiles and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test was used to detect hazardous use of alcohol. Results: The prevalence of hazardous use of alcohol among the study participants was 24%. Male gender, subjective perceived social support in case of difficulties, being sexually active, not dating, having smoked tobacco cigarettes or marijuana, and having used other illicit psychoactive substances were associated with hazardous use of alcohol. Discussion: Variables related to gender, sexuality, affective partnerships, and consumption of other psychoactive substances were associated with hazardous use of alcohol, which was identified in a quarter of the evaluated students, and indicate the need for strategies to prevent and to treat problems.

A literatura tem destacado, ainda, a associação de fatores ambientais, tais como religiosidade, condição de trabalho e uso de substâncias entre os amigos e parentes, e de fatores psicossociais, como conflitos com pais e sentimentos negativos e de solidão, com o uso de álcool e tabaco entre os estudantes 20,35,37,38 . Nessa perspectiva, a monitorização do BPE e do abuso e dependência de bebidas alcoólicas, por meio de dados epidemiológicos no ambiente universitário, torna-se uma prática necessária de vigilância em saúde, não apenas por se tratar de futuros profissionais da área da saúde, mas para o desenvolvimento de políticas públicas e estratégias de prevenção que visem diminuir o abuso e a dependência.…”

RESUMOObjetivo: Identificar entre os universitários da área da saúde de uma universidade brasileira a prevalência, o perfil do consumo de álcool e a prática do beber pesado episódico (BPE). Métodos: Estudo transversal, quantitativo, com amostra randomizada dos universitários dos 12 cursos da saúde. Foram aplicados questionários individualizados, em formulário eletrônico, utilizando a escala AUDIT, após consentimento informado. Foi realizada análise estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados: Entre os 619 estudantes selecionados, a prevalência de consumo de álcool foi de 85%, com perfil do consumo de baixo risco (77,1%). Consumo nocivo e provável dependência foram detectados em 2,7%. A prática do BPE foi de 51,6%, quase o dobro em comparação com outros estudos. As características que mais se associaram ao consumo de álcool foram: ser solteiro, do sexo masculino e frequentar festas semanalmente. Conclusão: O consumo de álcool é elevado entre os estudantes avaliados, embora a maioria esteja no perfil de baixo risco. Contudo, fica evidente a necessidade de ações educativas para a promoção da saúde do estudante, visando à redução e ao consumo consciente de bebidas alcoólicas. ABSTRACTObjective: To identify among university students of the health area of a Brazilian university the prevalence, alcohol consumption profile and the practice of episodic heavy drinking (EHD). Methods: A cross-sectional, quantitative study with a randomized sample of university students from 12 health courses. Individual questionnaires were used, in an electronic form, using the AUDIT scale, after informed consent. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis were performed. Results: Among the 619 students selected, the prevalence of alcohol consumption was 85%, profile of low risk consumption (77.1%). Harmful consumption and probable dependence were detected in 2.7%. The HDE practice was 51.6%, almost double when compared to other studies. The characteristics that were most associated with alcohol consumption were: being single, male and attending parties weekly. Conclusion: Alcohol consumption is high among the students evaluated, although most are in the low risk profile. However, it is evident the need for educational actions to promote student health, aiming at the reduction and conscious consumption of alcoholic beverages.

ResumoO aumento do consumo de álcool entre universitários tem gerado preocupações nos estudiosos da área que buscam intervenções preventivas efi cazes à diminuição desse consumo. Este estudo avaliou o padrão de consumo de álcool e suas consequências, antes e após a aplicação da intervenção BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screnning and Intervention for College Students) em uma amostra de universitários brasileiros, sendo em sua maioria estudantes do sexo feminino (53,1%) e da faixa etária de 18 a 24 anos (84,4%). Foram utilizados os instrumentos The Alcohol Use Disorders Identifi cation Test (AUDIT) e o Rutgers Alcohol Problem Index (RAPI) para caracterização do consumo de álcool e levantamento de suas consequências. Os que pontuaram acima de oito no AUDIT foram convidados a participar de um grupo experimental ou controle. A análise dos dados revelou que não houve diferença estatisticamente signifi cativa entre os grupos após a intervenção. Em ambos os grupos houve: diminuição das doses consumidas, menos prática de binge drinking e redução de algumas das consequências negativas. Tal resultado indica uma importante contribuição na área e sugere que o levantamento do padrão de consumo de álcool e o seu respectivo feedback pode gerar efeitos positivos na diminuição do consumo de álcool, assim como das suas consequências entre estudantes universitários. AbstractThe increase in alcohol consumption among college students has increased concerns among researchers seeking effective preventive interventions to decrease their consumption. This study assessed the pattern of alcohol consumption and its consequences before and after applying the BASICS intervention (Brief Alcohol Screnning and Intervention for College Students) in a sample of Brazilian university, with mostly female students (53.1%) aged between 18 and 24 years (84.4%). The Alcohol Use Disorders Identifi cation Test (AUDIT) and Rutgers Alcohol Problem Index (RAPI) tools were used to characterize alcohol consumption and its consequences. Those who scored above eight on the AUDIT were invited to participate in an experimental or control group. Data analysis revealed no statistically signifi cant difference between groups. In both groups there were: a decrease in used dosages, less practice of binge drinking, and decrease in some negative consequences. This result indicates an important contribution in the area and suggests that the screening of alcohol consumption pattern and its respective feedback can generate positive effects in the reduction of alcohol consumption, as well as its consequences among college students.
