Infestation of Aedes aegypti estimated by oviposition traps in Brazil

Abstract: ObjectiveTo assess infestation levels of Aedes aegypti using the oviposition trap (ovitrap) method and to compare these results with data obtained with the use of indices traditionally applied in public programs aimed at fighting this vector. Methods Nine sentinel areas in Northeastern, Brazil, were assessed and infestation levels were measured for a nine-month period. Egg density and container indices were estimated and compared with previous results found using the house index and Breteau index. ResultsThe r… Show more

“…aegypti in relation to larval survey is in accordance with the results from several studies (Rawlins et al 1998;Braga et al 2000;Morato et al 2005;Romero-Vivas & Falconar 2005;Gama et al 2007). It is important to note that disagreements occurred between the two methods such as in the fortnights 5/04 and from 16 to 19/04.…”

“…Due to its high capacity to spread and adapt, surveillance strategies for the vector are complex. Thus, it is important to develop sensitive methods capable of identifying the presence of the vector, measuring its density and correlating this with the risk of dengue transmission (Morato et al 2005;Focks 2003). Fay & Perry (1965) and Fay & Eliason (1966) used oviposition traps for adult Ae.…”

“…aegypti populations, such as Salvador (Morato et al 2005), Manaus (Ríos-Velasquez et al 2007) and Recife . At the same time, the House Index (HI), used by the Brazilian National Program for Dengue Control, showed for these places negative or low values, seldom more than 10%.…”

“…Mosquito egg traps (ovitrap) are a current trend as integral components of surveillance efforts, contributing to control efforts and monitoring of mosquito populations in countries with endemic dengue fever. This method was proven effective in detecting early infestations of Aedes aegypti L., particularly when density is low and larval indices are not good indicators (Braga et al 2000, Morato et al 2005. It is also useful in indicating critical areas for control activities (Masuh et al 2008, Regis et al 2008.…”
