Objective: To characterize the epidemiological profile of the hospitalized population in the ICU of Hospital das Clínicas de Marília (Famema). Method: A retrospective, descriptive and quantitative study. Data regarding patients admitted to the ICU Famema was obtained from the Technical Information Center (Núcleo Técnico de Informações, NTI, Famema). For data analysis, we used the distribution of absolute and relative frequencies with simple statistical treatment. Results: 2,022 ICU admissions were recorded from June 2010 to July 2012 with 1,936 being coded according to the ICD-10. The epidemiological profile comprised mostly males (57.91%), predominantly seniors ≥ 60 years (48.89%), at an average age of 56.64 years (±19.18), with limited formal education (63.3% complete primary school), mostly white (77.10%), Catholic (75.12%), from the city of Marília, state of São Paulo, Brazil (53.81%). The average occupancy rate was 94.42%. The predominant cause of morbidity was diseases of the circulatory system with 494 admissions (25.5%), followed by traumas and external causes with 446 admissions (23.03%) and neoplasms with 213 admissions (11.00%). The average stay was 8.09 days (±10.73). The longest average stay was due to skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases, with average stay of 12.77 days (±17.07). There were 471 deaths (24.32%), mainly caused by diseases of the circulatory system (30.99%). The age group with the highest mortality was the range from 70 to 79 years with 102 deaths (21.65%). Conclusion:The ICU Famema presents an epidemiological profile similar to other intensive care units in Brazil and worldwide, despite the few studies available in the literature. Thus, we feel in tune with the treatment of critical care patients.

Objetivo: Este estudo objetivou revisar a literatura para compreender a instabilidade postural em idosos durante hospitalização. O envelhecimento por meio das implicações fi siológicas e patológicas pode resultar no surgimento das síndromes geriátricas, na qual a instabilidade postural pode desencadear complicações para a saúde do idoso. Materiais e Métodos: artigos que abordassem sobre a instabilidade postural em idosos durante a hospitalização e publicados entre 2001 a 2015 foram incluídos no estudo. Excluíram-se aqueles que abordaram a instabilidade postural associada a outras doenças. Resultados: 14 artigos fi zeram parte do estudo, sendo a maioria referente às alterações posturais que podem infl uenciar nas atividades de vida diária. Idosos que permanecem por tempo indeterminado internados em uma unidade hospitalar estão mais susceptíveis a diversas alterações motoras e cognitivas, além de gerar custos e tempo prolongado na instituição. A instabilidade postural pode aumentar o risco de ocorrer quedas e interfere no desempenho funcional dos idosos. A restrição da mobilidade física resulta em enrijecimento das articulações, perda de estruturas ósseas e presença de patologias agudas ou crônicas. O uso de medicamentos também interfere no controle postural dos idosos hospitalizados, provocam reações adversas, alterações cognitivas e motoras. Considerações Finais: Por conta da escassez de ensaios clínicos que envolvam o tema novos estudos são necessários para fundamentar e compreender a instabilidade postural em idosos durante hospitalização. Long-term care facilities for the elderly have regularly to work together with general hospitals to provide care to acutely ill residents or when they require all together more complex diagnostic procedures and multi-specialty care. The decision to hospitalize a nursing home elderly resident is multifactorial and it is based on factors such as illness severity and care facility infrastructure. Hospitalizations have benefits and risks such developing iatrogenic diseases, delirium, and functional decline, which may deteriorate patients' general condition and their quality of life during and/or after hospitalization. This study aimed at addressing specific aspects of assessment, treatment and management of nursing home elderly who require to be hospitalized, especially focusing on their effective care. Common conditions such delirium, iatrogenic diseases, poor nutrition, functional decline, hospice care and special characteristics of nursing home elderly during their admission to general hospitals are discussed.
