“…16 The significant trend towards a decrease in infant mortality rates according to geoeconomic classification confirms that income plays an important role as a health determinant in urban areas in Brazil. 13,16,17 The results also support the hypothesis that the variations of the post-neonatal component can discriminate social inequalities with more accuracy, presumably because they are more related to the disparities in access to goods, social services, adequate environment and adequate nutritional levels than the neonatal component. 3,15 Population mortality rates, including infant mortality, are strongly related to persistent low income and income uncertainty as well as the extent of income inequality in a population.…”

When compared to children from privileged families, poor children present higher mortality 10,13,24 , are more frequently ill 11,15,24 , are born with a lower weight 4,25 and are more frequently malnourished 1,9,24 . The mechanisms by which poverty affects the health status are diverse and not fully understood.…”

Já foi citado que a estratificação econômica, quando considerada na análise, eliminou a importância da idade e da paridade materna na distribuição do peso e da idade gestacional de recém--nascidos 41 .…”
