Purpose: To perform a descriptive analysis of the performance of patients referred to a public educational institution to take part in the assessment of auditory processing and to correlate the assessment findings to the variables of age and hearing complaints, also to correlate results to behavioral and electrophysiological assessments. Methods: The study included 159 individuals that were referred to the public health system to take part in an assessment of auditory processing. All participants underwent pure-tone audiometry, acoustic immittance measures, behavioral tests of auditory processing, and electrophysiological hearing assessment. Results: The main complaint was learning disability and the tests that presented higher prevalence of abnormal results were temporal processing and dichotic listening tests. In all electrophysiological tests the number of normal results was higher than the altered ones. The proportion of normal and abnormal individuals in behavioral and electrophysiological tests did not differ in relation to gender. There was weak correlation between auditory closure and right ear middle latency responses; between left ear middle latency responses and total middle latency responses; among temporal ordering and electrode effect and P300; between temporal processing and right ear middle latency responses; between dichotic listening and P300 and also between binaural interaction and right and left ears acoustic reflexes. Conclusion: The most frequent complaint among participants of this study was learning disability. Temporal processing and dichotic listening skills showed higher prevalence of alteration in the assessment. Most participants were referred to assessment of auditory processing by the speech-language pathologist. Métodos: O estudo incluiu 159 indivíduos encaminhados pelo sistema público de saúde para avaliação do processamento auditivo. Todos os participantes realizaram audiometria tonal liminar, medidas de imitância acústica, testes comportamentais do processamento auditivo e avaliação eletrofisiológica da audição. Resultados: A principal queixa referida foi a de dificuldade de aprendizagem e os testes que avaliam processamento temporal e escuta dicótica foram os que apresentaram maior prevalência de alteração. Em todos os testes eletrofisiológicos, o número de resultados normais foi superior aos alterados. It is thought that a close relationship exists between auditory processing, the acoustic reflex and speech.Aim: A retrospective study to evaluate these three aspects in children with and without phonological disorders and seek any relationship among them.Material Methods: 46 children were enrolled: 24 had normal speech abilities and 22 had phonological disorders. All children underwent auditory processing and acoustic reflex threshold testing. Design: Cross-sectional contemporary.Results: Auditory processing and acoustic reflex thresholds were abnormal in all children with phonological disorders. This was not the case in children with normal speech development. Conclusion:Changes in the auditory processing and acoustic reflex thresholds are closely related to speech difficulties. Introdução: O Reflexo Acústico (RA) é considerado uma importante ferramenta diagnóstica dos distúrbios da audição. Seu limiar está normal na faixa de 70 a 90 dBNS. Para que o RA ocorra, é necessária a integridade do sistema auditivo periférico e central principalmente ao nível do Tronco Encefálico (TE). Estruturas do TE relacionadas com o RA são também responsáveis pelo Processamento Auditivo (PA) no que diz respeito a importantes habilidades auditivas. Objetivo: Neste estudo, procuramos verificar o desempenho de indivíduos com audição periférica normal e ausência do RA Contralateral no reconhecimento de dissílabos em tarefa dicótica por meio Teste SSW, versão em português. Forma de estudo: Clínico prospectivo randomizado. Material e Método: A casuística é composta de 100 indivíduos com idades de 19-59 anos, de ambos os sexos, distribuídos nos grupos Controle (n=50) e Estudo (n=50). O grupo Estudo apresenta audição periférica normal, e ausência do RA Contralateral em pelo menos uma freqüência testada. Resultados: Os grupos apresentaram diferenças estatisticamente significantes com relação à ausência do RA Contralateral e Ipsilateral em todas as freqüências testadas bilateralmente. Quanto aos resultados de normalidade do Teste SSW, as diferenças foram estatisticamente significantes nas condições de Direito e Esquerdo Competitivos e tendências de respostas de Efeito Auditivo, Efeito de Ordem e Tipo A. Na comparação por número de erros, houve diferenças estatisticamente significantes nas situações de Direito e Esquerdo Competitivos. Conclusões: Os resultados deste estudo reforçam a relevância do papel das estruturas responsáveis pelo RA no PA, sugerindo que pacientes com audição periférica normal e alterações do RA sejam submetidos à avaliação do PA.
