A theoretical-Reflective study with the objective to reflect on human needs regarding the imbalance of whole blood donors considering adverse reactions to the donation, and the existing nursing diagnoses that best meet the imbalance needs. The following needs were pointed out according to the signs and symptoms of adverse reactions and based on the Theory of Basic Human Needs: skin and tissue integrity, emotional security, pain perception, body mechanics, oxygenation, physical integrity, physical comfort, elimination, neurological, electrolytic and vascular regulation. By observing NANDA International's Definitions and Classifications, adaptations to the existing nursing diagnoses and suggestions for new headings have been proposed. We conclude that some of the needs are interrelated, such as vascular regulation, oxygenation and physical integrity. Thus, more contextualized nursing diagnoses related to the needs of whole blood donors are needed, given the specific nature of the situation generating imbalances such as: ineffective systemic vascular regulation characterized by self-reported dizziness, cutaneous pallor and arterial hypotension related to vasovagal reaction.

The aim of this study was to identify types of adverse events, clinical manifestations and nursing care procedures adopted in response to adverse events to blood donation, and to verify the association between these procedures and the adverse events. This was an epidemiological, retrospective study conducted through analysis of 1369 records of treatment of adverse events to blood donation, during the period between January 2009 and December 2011. Descriptive statistics and contingency tables were used to analyze associations through the use of Cramér's V. A total of 92.6% of adverse events were classified as mild, and clinical manifestations were malaise, dizziness, pallor and sweating. The Trendelenburg position, vital signs monitoring, oral hydration and directions for care after blood donation were the main procedures adopted. A statistical significance was observed between the nursing procedures and the types of adverse events. The results point to the critical role of nursing in treating adverse events to blood donation.

ResumoIntrodução: Um dos desafios das instituições de saúde é conservar a captação de sangue, uma vez que os doadores representam apenas 1,8% da população brasileira. É de fundamental importância o papel do profissional de enfermagem na conscientização, na captação e na triagem de doadores voluntários. Objetivos: Identificar a representação epidemiológica dos pretendentes à oferta de sangue do Hemocentro de uma unidade hospitalar no Sul de Minas Gerais. Material e Métodos: Estudo retrospectivo e descritivo, com abordagem quantitativa. A coleta foi executada da apreciação do Hemocentro no ano de 2011, com uma amostra de 2.680 candidatos. Foi utilizado o instrumento do próprio Sistema que contém as Fichas de Triagem do Candidato a Doador de Sangue. Para a análise dos dados, fez-se a tabulação no Microsoft Excel Windows 7 Ultimate®, 2011, e a elaboração de tabelas e gráficos com valores absolutos e percentuais. Resultados: Observou-se que 82% candidatos foram aptos e 18%, inaptos, prevalecendo o sexo masculino, entre 18 a 29 anos e doadores de repetição. Diante do perfil dos doadores desta pesquisa, vale ressaltar a importância da elaboração de campanhas educacionais quanto à doação de sangue, a fim de diminuir o número de inaptos, melhorando a qualidade dos candidatos. Conclusão: Os achados demonstram a importância de campanhas que conscientizem os indivíduos sobre as características ideais para quem pretenda a oferecer sangue, para que, assim, ocorra um aumento de sujeitos aptos.Descritores: Sangue; Seleção do Doador; Perfil de Saúde. Abstract Introduction:One of the challenges of health facilities is to conserve the blood specimen collection, once donors represent only 1.8% of the Brazilian population. Thus, it is extremely important the registered nurse's role in the awareness, attraction, and volunteer donor screening. Objectives: Identify the epidemiological representation from applicants to the offering/donation of blood at the Hemotherapy Service of a hospital in Southern region of Minas Gerais. Material and Methods: We carried out a retrospective, descriptive study using a quantitative approach. In 2011, we carried out at the Hemotherapy Service database a search for the medical files of blood donation candidates. The study sample was composed of 2,680 donors' medical records. In order to analyze data, we used a spreadsheet from Microsoft Excel Windows 7 Ultimate TM , 2011. Data are presented as absolute numbers and percentage in tables and graphs. Results: It was observed that 82% candidates were qualified to blood donation. Males were the most prevalent gender with ages ranging from 18 to 29, as well as the recurrent donors. Given the donor profile of this research, it is worth mentioning the importance of developing educational campaigns regarding blood donation in order to decrease the number of unqualified blood donors, improving the quality of the candidates.
