The purposes of the study was to analyze the meanings assigned by the father to the assistance of pre-term infants in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and to discuss how these meanings influence paternal care. It is a qualitative study with an ethnographic approach, carried out in a neonatal unit in Rio de Janeiro. Twenty-two fathers whose pre-term infants were hospitalized have been interviewed. Data were collected by means of a field logbook, participative observation and semi-structured interviews. Through thematic analysis, the inferred categories were a) father-child proximity and the permanence at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: overcoming obstacles and revealing motivations, b) the inclusion of fathers in caring for pre-term children: limits and possibilities. Nurses should favor the proximity of fathers and newborns to strengthen their relationship. The intensivist care neonatal practice should include strategies to support male parenting in pre-term birth considering the perspective of gender equity.

ResumoEste estudo objetivou descrever a utilização do Child Neglect Index para identifi car casos de crianças negligenciadas por seus pais/cuidadores no contexto brasileiro. Após adaptação inicial à realidade sociocultural brasileira, o instrumento foi aplicado em três grupos de indivíduos, cada qual com 30 díades de crianças/pais, totalizando 90 díades (n=180), assim compostos: G1 (primeiro grupo) = casos ofi cialmente notifi cados por negligência infantil; G2 (segundo grupo) = casos suspeitos de negligência não notifi cados; G3 (terceiro grupo) = casos sem suspeita de negligência ou outra forma de maus-tratos (grupo de comparação); além de um quarto grupo de professoras dessas crianças (n=11). Os resultados apontaram altos escores no índice de negligência em G1 e G2, e baixos escores em G3, sugerindo presença de indicadores de falta de supervisão parental referentes a cuidados com alimentação, vestimenta, higiene, saúde física, saúde mental e educação nos dois primeiros grupos avaliados, comparativamente às crianças sem suspeita de maus-tratos. Os atuais achados empíricos, embora preliminares em termos de adaptação do Child Neglect Index ao contexto do Brasil, foram promissores ao sinalizar potencial do instrumento como recurso para detecção/confi rmação da negligência infantil, estimulando novas investigações e aprimoramento desse recurso técnico para favorecer adequada identifi cação e intervenção nesses casos. AbstractThis study describes the use of Child Neglect Index to identify cases of children neglected by their parents/caregivers in the Brazilian context. After initial adaptation to the Brazilian sociocultural reality, the instrument was applied in three different groups. Each group is composed of 30 dyads of children/parents, totaling 90 dyads of participants (n=180). They are: G1 (fi rst group) = offi cially reported cases of child neglect; G2 (second group) = suspected cases of neglect, but not notifi ed; G3 (third group) = unsuspected cases of neglect or otherwise abuse (comparison group). There is also a fourth group composed of the children's teachers (n=11). The results showed high scores on the index of neglect in G1 and G2, but low scores in G3, suggesting the presence of indicators of lack of parental supervision regarding the care of food, clothing, hygiene, physical health, mental health and education in the fi rst two groups evaluated when compared to no suspicion of child maltreatment. The current empirical fi ndings, although preliminary in terms of adaptation of Child Neglect Index to the Brazilian context, were promising to signal the potential of the instrument as a resource for detection/confi rmation of child neglect. It stimulates further research and improvements in this technical resource to facilitate proper identifi cation and intervention in these cases. ABSRACT Objective: to characterize children hospitalized due to violence in a pediatric ICU in 2011; to relate violence and the mechanisms of trauma with death; to know the contextualization of violence, from the records in the medical records. Method: retrospective cohort, performed in a fi rst aid hospital, Porto Alegre city, in the records of 22 children hospitalized in the ICU due to violence. Quantitative analysis was performed by absolute and relative frequency rates, chi-square and relative risk. Results: 54.5% were boys, 81.8% were white and 50% were up to three years old. Physical violence 50% and neglect 36.4%, family of children (77.3%), highlighting the mother (35.3%). Mechanisms of aggression: fall (22.7%), burns (18.2%). Burns were at high risk for death. Discharge to go home after ICU admission (59.1%). Conclusion: It is considered that the characterization of the cases of violence refl ects the complexity of the theme, mainly, in face of the life histories that surround each case of children hospitalized by this aggravation. Realizou-se análise quantitativa por índices frequenciais absolutos e relativos, qui-quadrado e risco relativo. Resultados: 54,5% eram meninos, raça/etnia branca 81,8% e 50% tinham até três anos. Violência física 50% e a negligência 36,4%, familiar da criança (77,3%), destaque para a mãe (35,3%). Mecanismos de agressão: queda (22,7%), queimaduras (18,2%). As queimaduras apresentaram risco elevado para óbito. Alta para casa após internação em UTI (59,1%). Conclusão: Considera-se que a caracterização dos casos de violência refl ete a complexidade do tema, principalmente, diante das histórias de vida que envolve cada caso de criança hospitalizada por este agravo.
