Leptina: o diálogo entre adipócitos e neurônios

Abstract: The discovery of leptin led to a renewed interest in the study of enegy homeostasis. It is now recognized that white adipose tissue is the major site of leptin synthesis. After it is secreted into the bloodstream leptin binds itself to specific receptors in the brain, providing the central nervous system with a satiety signal that reflects the amount of energy stored as fat. Acting through receptors that transduce a signal by the JAK/STAT pathway, leptin modifies the expression and activity of hypothalamic pep… Show more

“…13 Moreover, several factors exert a direct influence on leptin levels, such as glucocorticoids, physical exercise 14,15 and zinc. [16][17][18] Cortisol is a glucocorticoid secreted by the adrenal cortex and among other functions, increases glyconeogenesis and promotes fat mobilization and utilization.…”

“…It is known as the "satiety hormone" for having influence on the appetite reduction process 3 . Its secretion may be influenced by many physiological mechanisms, such as fasting, the glucocorticoids, the sympathetic activity, physical exercise and alterations in the body weight and energetic balance, which can drastically alter the quantity of leptin intrinsically associated with fat mass 9 a fail in its production, and/or its activity over the receptors of the hypothalamus could distort the positive energetic balance, creating the obesity scenario 10 .…”
