Renewed in-depth multi-disciplinary investigation of a large coastal mound settlement in Peru has extended the occupation back more than 7000 years to a first human exploitation ~13720 BP. Research by the authors has chronicled the prehistoric sequence from the activities of the first maritime foragers to the construction of the black mound and the introduction of horticulture and monumentality. The community of Huaca Prieta emerges as innovative, complex and ritualised, as yet with no antecedents.

RESUMOObjetivo: Estabelecer, entre os pontos de corte do índice homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), citados na literatura, o melhor em identifi car a síndrome metabólica (SM) em crianças com obesidade e sobrepeso. Métodos: Foram estudadas 140 crianças pré-púberes. A defi nição de SM foi adaptada da International Diabetes Federation. Para cada ponto de corte de HOMA-IR foram estimados sensibilidade e especifi cidade, tomandose como desfecho a SM. Uma curva receiver operating characteristic (ROC) foi construída com estes valores. Resultados: O grupo estudado constituiu-se de 106 crianças com obesidade (37 meninas e 69 meninos) e 34 com sobrepeso (19 meninas e 15 meninos), média de idade 6,5 ± 2,3 anos. A acurácia da curva ROC foi 72%, e o melhor ponto de corte foi 2,5, com sensibilidade 61% e especifi cidade 74%. Conclusões: O índice HOMA-IR pode ser útil para detectar a SM, e o ponto de corte 2,5 mostrou-se o melhor para crianças pré-pú-beres com obesidade e sobrepeso. Objective: To establish, among the cut-off values for the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) cited in the literature, the best in identifying metabolic syndrome (MS) in obese and overweight children. Methods: A total of 106 pre-pubertal children were studied. The defi nition of MS was adapted from that of the International Diabetes Federation. For each cut-off values for HOMA-IR, it was estimated sensibility and specifi city for MS. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was generated using these values. Results: The study included 106 obese (37 girls and 69 boys) and 34 overweight (19 girls and 15 boys) children aged 6,5 ± 2,3 years. The accuracy of the ROC curve was 72%, and the best cut-off value for HOMA-IR was 2,5, with sensitivity of 61% and specifi city of 74%. Conclusions: HO-MA-IR may be useful to detect MS and the cut-off 2,5 seems to be the best in obese and overweight pre-pubertal children.

Objective: To verify the impact of obesity on metabolic syndrome components and adipokine levels in prepubertal children. Methods:This cross-sectional study compared 30 obese, 31 overweight and 33 eutrophic children attending a university hospital-based outpatient pediatric clinic. Parameters assessed included glucose, serum lipids, insulin, homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), glucose/insulin relation, adiponectin, and leptin. We compared the frequency of acanthosis nigricans and changes in waist, blood pressure, glucose, serum lipids, and insulin. The correlation between body mass index (BMI) z score and adipokines was evaluated.Results: Among obese children, there was a difference in the mean values of HDL cholesterol and adiponectin, whereas among the eutrophic children, there was a difference in the mean values of insulin, HOMA-IR, glucose/insulin relation, and leptin (p < 0.001). A difference was also observed regarding the frequency of acanthosis nigricans and alteration in waist and HDL cholesterol (p < 0.005) in the obese group. The BMI z score showed a positive correlation with leptin (p < 0.001) and a negative correlation with adiponectin (p = 0.001). In multiple linear regression, this correlation was maintained only for leptin; HDL-cholesterol correlated with adiponectin (p = 0.007) and HOMA-IR correlated with both variables (p < 0.05). ResumoObjetivo: o objetivo deste artigo é realizar uma atualização em anorexia e insônia na infância. Fontes de dados:foram revisados os principais tipos e causas de anorexia e de insônia na infância, bem como seus diagnósticos e tratamentos. A revisão foi baseada em artigos pesquisados na base de dados Medline, nos últimos cinco anos, utilizando os termos anorexia, distúrbios da alimentação, insônia, distúrbios do sono e infância. Alguns livros-texto também foram incluídos. Síntese dos dados:o texto que aborda anorexia e insônia na infância apresenta definição, principais tipos e causas, diagnóstico e tratamento para cada um dos assuntos. Conclusões: anorexia e insônia são problemas prevalentes na infância, sendo a primeira muito mais abordada nas consultas pediátricas. O diagnóstico, na maioria das vezes, é através de uma anamnese bem feita. Ambas são geralmente de origem comportamental e refletem a dinâmica familiar. Some textbooks were also included.Summary of the findings: definition, main types and causes, diagnosis and treatment of anorexia and insomnia are presented.Conclusions: anorexia and insomnia are prevalent in childhood. The former is a much more frequent complaint in pediatric visits. The diagnosis is almost always based solely on a good history. Both conditions are generally behavioral and reflect the family dynamics. They are preventable and treated at the primary care level, based upon simple strategies, although sometimes not easily accepted by the patients. In order to check the presence and distribution of Rhyacophila fasciata fasciata Hagen 1859 (species described from Austria) and R. fasciata denticulata McLachlan 1879 in the Iberian Peninsula, we studied the morphology of Spanish, French, and Austrian specimens, together with their mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase (mtCOI). We observed that the individuals considered to date as R. fasciata denticulata are in fact two different species: R. denticulata, presently known from France and possibly in some rivers of the Basque Country (Spain), and R. sociata Navás 1916 distributed in Spain and France. These two species are also different from the reference species (R. fasciata) from Austria, so we propose a change in the taxonomic status of R. fasciata denticulata to R. denticulata (stat. prom.) and the restoration of R. sociata (stat. res.), with the designation of a neotype, due to the loss of the holotype.

The biodiversity of groundwater fauna remains poorly known and understood. Groundwater biodiversity studies are strongly affected by habitat inaccessibility and taxonomic crisis. The objective of this work was to investigate levels of genetic divergence across populations of Bathynellacea, a small crustacean group that lives exclusively in groundwater, in order to evaluate the extent of cryptic speciation in morphologically constrained clades. Partial sequences of cytochrome oxidase I (COI) have been obtained, for the first time in Bathynellidae. Specimens analyzed of the genus Vejdovskybathynella were obtained from six populations morphologically assignable to a single species; all of them are located in different areas of one of the largest karst systems (110 km of galleries topographied) known in Spain. The analyses of molecular data demonstrate the presence of three highly divergent genetic units, possibly corresponding to undescribed new species. The results of this study provide the first molecular data that complement morphological knowledge in order to address phylogenetic studies to try to resolve the relations between genera and species of the Bathynellidae family. We conclude that the evolutionary scenario of this special group of subterranean crustaceans cannot be revealed only by using morphological information due to the presence of very old lineages of cryptic species, as has been brought to light with the molecular data obtained here.
