Simulated moving bed (SMB) chromatography is a widely used technique for the resolution of compounds difficult to separate. SMB parameter estimation is traditionally carried out following a time and money consuming series of experiments in an SMB unit where deviations may arise. This work aims to present a novel global and straightforward parameter estimation procedure together with uncertainty analysis. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is employed to search for parameters in an eight-dimensional space, avoid local minima, and enable uncertainty analysis. The proposed methodology is validated in a software-in-the-loop approach. A new parameter estimation is then carried out using the data of one experimental run from the literature, together with uncertainty evaluation based on the PSO-generated population that enables model validation and definition of confidence regions for the model. A robust method for the parameter estimation of an SMB unit is presented in order to produce a more precise and reliable model. In addition, it also significantly reduces the number of necessary steps for parameter estimation, leading to a more efficient procedure. The results show that it is possible to perform parameter estimation from SMB chromatography producing a more trustworthy model.

“…While the validity of these surveys has been questioned, a qualitative oral history sample I collected in 2007 in Rio confirms these results and illustrates that public opinion on the military regime is profoundly divided. My samples were distinguished by class, gender and age and consisted of a total of eleven interviews (with Souza, Cleofas, Corrêa, Ferreira, Caitano, Pinto, João, Dalva, Tereza, anonymous and Santos in 2007). Since my interview sample was small, the interviewees picked randomly and the survey deliberately qualitative, the responses cannot be regarded as representative of the Brazilian population.…”

This article elucidates the latest developments in the 'politics of memory' regarding the military regime in Brazil. Only recently, I argue, has the Brazilian state abandoned its 'politics of silence' and started to actively champion the memory of the left-wing 'resistance'. This new strategy climaxed in a governmental crisis over a historic plan to establish a National Truth Commission to investigate human rights violations during the military regime. The article analyses key incidents and debates prior to the crisis, and contrasts the post-dictatorial collective memory of Brazil with that of other Latin American countries.

This study aims to find more efficient ways to manufacture highly reactive polyisobutylene (HRPIB) and modified conventional PIB materials (MCPIB) industrially with high vinyl exo‐group contents through cationic polymerization at mild temperatures. The study performed polymerizations using aluminum trichloride (AlCl3) as a catalyst with different nonpolar solvents (hexane and toluene), reaction temperatures (10 and 30°C), and co‐catalysts (water and dibutyl ether [DBE]). At 30°C, toluene can provide vinyl contents above 30 mol%. Particularly, an important synergetic effect was observed between toluene and ether, as corroborated by statistical analyses, resulting in vinyl contents above 50 mol%, while reactions performed in n‐hexane provided maximum vinyl content of 20 mol%. In all cases, number average molar masses ranged from 200 to 1000 Da, which are typical of CPIB and MCPIB materials. Moreover, addition of excess of ether indicated the likely inhibition of reaction rates in presence of high ether concentrations (≥1.18 × 10 −1 mol/L). The obtained results indicated that AlCl3 can be used successfully to manufacture MCPIB products with terminal vinyl contents above 50 mol% at mild temperatures in common nonpolar solvents (n‐hexane and toluene) and in presence of common co‐catalysts (water and DBE) with high rates of reactions.
