Performance in vitro of apex locators in determining root length in primary molars

Abstract: ObjectiveThe aim of the study was to evaluate performance of digital radiographic and two electronic apex locators, Propex II and Root ZX in root canal length determination in primary molars. Methods primary molars were divided into two groups, G1 without root resorption and G2 with root resorption. The exams were performed using all methods by two experienced examiners, with 1-week interval. The gold standard was determined by visual examination. The methods were statistically analyzed regarding the values o… Show more

“…17,25,26 Bertoli et al, using similar TI's to our study, recorded accuracy rates ranging from 72.5%-85% in teeth without resorption and 54.7%-72.9% in teeth with resorption. 31 Our study found that another version of this EAL, Root ZX Mini, was affected by root resorption. Moreover, Root ZX Mini showed the lowest accuracy rate in teeth with resorption.…”

“…The use of the apex locator has been shown to reduce clinical time, aside from avoiding unnecessary exposure to radiation and not causing pain to the patient, which makes its use more favourable for endodontic procedures in pediatric dentistry [26][27][28]. Studies conducted with different types of apex locators have evaluated their efficiency in deciduous teeth and have obtained satisfactory results, showing that their use can bring advantages to the treatment of deciduous teeth [9,10,[16][17][18]27,28].…”
