Temporomandibular disorders and oral habits in high-school adolescents: a public health issue?

Abstract: ObjectiveDetermine the prevalence of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) (p = 0.032) habits (p = 0.014) Results 84.5% of individuals showed a degree of auto-reported dysfunction. The most frequent parafunctional habit was chewing gum (65.9%) while the habit of biting objects was significantly associated with the presence of TMD symptoms (p = 0.042). “…The orofacial pain among children and adolescents, which is also a TMD symptom, is an important public health problem [29] and it should be diagnosed as early as possible since late diagnosis can lead to a more severely compromised state resulting from these pathologies, with relevant consequences [30]. Therefore, assessment of the adolescent population, who are often exposed to possible risk factors, is important to establish the epidemiological pattern of TMD and work at prevention level to avoid the occurrence of the pathology in adulthood [30].…”

“…In another study performed with adolescents aged 16 through 19 years to verify the prevalence of signs and symptoms of TMD and its relation to parafunctional habits, the habit of biting objects was significantly associated with the presence of TMD symptoms (OLIVEIRA et al, 2016).…”

“…Other studies show a relation of parafunctional habits as contributing factors that either predispose TMD or are considered risk factors (KARIBE et al, 2015;KOBS et al, 2005;OLIVEIRA et al, 2016;WINOCUR et al, 2006).…”

“…Além disso, de acordo com os resultados deste estudo, uma pessoa com sintomas de DTM possui, em média, o dobro de hábitos orais de quem não tem. Sabe-se que a DTM tem etiologia multifatorial e os hábitos orais deletérios tem sido considerados fatores de alta relevância para surgimento ou progressão da disfunção temporomandibular, assim como mencionam outros autores 22,23 .…”
