ObjectiveDetermine the prevalence of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) (p = 0.032) habits (p = 0.014) Results 84.5% of individuals showed a degree of auto-reported dysfunction. The most frequent parafunctional habit was chewing gum (65.9%) while the habit of biting objects was significantly associated with the presence of TMD symptoms (p = 0.042). Purpose: to know the profile of members of the Brazilian Association of Orofacial Motricity and their knowledge and interest on laser therapy in Orofacial Motricity. Methods: an online form was elaborated covering questions about the speech therapist’s profile, training, and acting, as well as his/her knowledge about the theories of laser therapy and its clinical application. The form was sent via e-mail to members of the Brazilian Association of Orofacial Motricity - ABRAMO, registered in the year 2015. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and the Spearman’s correlation test. Results: only 5 (19.2%) out of the 26 participants reported having contact with laser equipment, and of these, only 1 (3.8%) used it in his/her practice. Regarding knowledge of the method, only 2 (7.7%) were trained, and the majority, 14 speech therapists (53.8%), had an interest in acquiring knowledge on this subject. Speech therapists with a longer training period were unaware of laser therapy (p = 0.03) and did not agree on the use (p = 0.01), but claimed to be interested in the subject (p = 0.05). Conclusion: it was possible to verify that the interest in improvement and insertion in the clinical practice in laser therapy are realities for the research volunteers, but a very small number has the knowledge and makes use of the technique in their interventions.

Purpose: to evaluate the methodological quality of clinical trials published in Brazilian journals. Methods: four trained independent researchers conducted a systematic literature search of all Brazilian speech therapy-related journals over the last ten years, whether the journals were active or inactive. All journal volumes published during that period were selected, and each researcher conducted an individual analysis to identify articles that focused primarily on orofacial motricity. The tools used were the Downs and Black Quality Checklist and the Jadad scale. Results: after the studies were selected and categorized, the final sample comprised six articles, all of which were classified as clinical trials. The observed methodological limitations included a lack of sample planning, randomization and blinding. Mean scores of 16.3 points on the Downs and Black Quality Checklist and 2.3 on the Jadad scale were obtained. Conclusion: the randomized controlled trials in the area of orofacial motricity are scarce in Brazilian literature, suggesting that studies in this area adopting this research design should be expanded and their quality should be improved to promote clinical practice based on scientific evidence.

ResumoIntrodução: A relação da oclusão dentária com a Disfunção Temporomandibular (DTM) ainda gera divergências. Muitos profissionais erroneamente baseiam o diagnóstico e a terapia estritamente no fator oclusal, apesar das evidências científicas atuais não mostrarem tal relação. Objetivo: Avaliar o conhecimento dos cirurgiões-dentistas (CDs) de João Pessoa-PB, acerca da relação entre fatores oclusais e DTM. Material e método: Uma amostra de 100 CDs que não possuem especialização em DTM e Dor Orofacial (Grupo GN), além de sete CDs com essa especialidade (Grupo GE) preencheram questionário abordando assuntos relativos ao conhecimento da DTM e sua relação com fatores oclusais. O questionário continha também informações para caracterização da amostra como idade, gênero e tempo de formado. O grau de consenso da literatura atual para cada sentença foi estabelecido como "padrão-ouro" de resposta, o qual foi comparado com as respostas dos especialistas e não especialistas. Os dados foram tabulados no programa SPSS e analisados de forma descritiva (através de porcentagens) e, estatística, por meio dos testes Qui-quadrado e Exato de Fisher (p<0,05). Resultado: Observou-se grande divergência no conhecimento dos cirurgiões-dentistas sem especialidade em DTM e Dor Orofacial com os profissionais dessa especialidade. Conclusão: Houve baixa concordância entre os especialistas e não especialistas. A relação entre oclusão dentária e disfunção temporomandibular ainda permanece obscura para a grande maioria dos profissionais entrevistados, o que pode vir a se refletir em condutas de diagnóstico e tratamento oclusal inadequadas para o manejo das DTM.Descritores: Oclusão dentária; síndrome da disfunção da articulação temporomandibular; conhecimento. Abstract Introduction:The relationship between dental occlusion and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) remains a subject of disagreement. Many professionals erroneously base diagnosis and treatment strictly on the occlusal factor, despite the fact that current scientific evidence does not show such a relationship. Objective: To evaluate the knowledge of dental surgeons (DSs) from João Pessoa (PB)-Brazil, regarding the relationship between occlusal factors and TMD. Materials and method: A sample of 100 DSs who do not have expertise in TMD and orofacial pain (CG Group) and seven DSs with this specialty (EG Group) completed a questionnaire that addresses issues concerning knowledge of TMD and its relationship with occlusal factors. The questionnaire also contained information used to characterize the sample, such as age, gender, and length of experience. The current literature's degree of consensus was established as the "gold standard" response for each statement and was compared with the responses of the specialists and non-specialists. A complete review of Brazilian scientific articles on orofacial myology (OM) published in the last 10 years was conducted to describe, categorize and quantitatively analyze studies in the field of OM. Data were collected from all Brazilian journals on speech-language and hearing sciences published between 2005 and 2015. All articles were reviewed and categorized according to the year of publication, type of article and subject area. Furthermore, all studies conducted on humans that reported quantitative data were analyzed regarding age group, scope, main objective and type of study. The data were discussed from the standpoint of scientific methodology applied for the improvement of methods and for evidence-based scientific development. Moreover, aspects to be considered in future studies in this field are suggested. Os dados foram coletados em todas as publicações em motricidade orofacial publicadas nos últimos dez anos, após uma análise integral de todos os periódicos brasileiros em Fonoaudiologia. Os artigos foram categorizados quanto ao ano, tipo de artigo e área temática. Além disso, foram analisados sobre a faixa etária, abrangência, essência do objetivo e tipo de estudo todos os artigos realizados com seres humanos e com dados quantitativos. Os dados foram discutidos sob a ótica da metodologia científica aplicada ao aperfeiçoamento do método e desenvolvimento da ciência baseado em evidências. Além disto, os dados são analisados com sugestões de aspectos potenciais a serem considerados para futuras pesquisas na área.

Objective: to compare the electrical activity of masseter muscles, bilaterally, according to the presence or absence of Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) in college students with a high degree of anxiety. Methods: the study was conducted with a randomized sample of 31 Speech Therapy students aged between 17 and 32 years; 61.3% (n = 19) were females and 38.7% (n = 12) were males. They were divided into two groups, Group 1 (G1), comprising 11 students with TMD, and Group 2 (G2), composed of 20 students without TMD. The college students answered the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) for anxiety investigation, and were evaluated by the protocol Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) for TMD diagnosis. The evaluation of muscular electrical activity took into account the records in the conditions of rest, Sustained Maximum Voluntary Activity (SMVA) and habitual chewing (HC). The data were analyzed using the version 22 IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The statistical analysis was performed using Student t test to compare means between groups, considering < 0,05 as the significant p-value. Results: college students, of both groups, presented high levels of anxiety traits. Significant statistical differences were observed on the percentage of electrical activity of right masseter muscle in chewing function, as well as muscle fibers recruitment during chewing, which were higher on the group without TMD. Conclusion: college students with TMD and a high degree of anxiety presented lower means of masseter muscle electromyografic activity during chewing, in most conditions assessed, as compared to volunteers without TMD, except for the left masseter muscle in rest and chewing.

Resumo: O tema proposto é Intervenção Fonoaudiológica pré e pós Cirurgia Ortognática. Foi realizada avaliação (por meio do Protocolo de Avaliação Miofuncional Orofacial MBGR com escores) e intervenção fonoaudiológica em período pré-operatório (por três meses) e pós-operatório iniciado no 20º dia (por três meses), após a liberação do cirurgião. Além disso, investigou-se o impacto da deformidade dentofacial na qualidade de vida do paciente, por meio do Oral Health Impact Profile - versão reduzida. Na avaliação pré-operatória, foram encontradas mastigação bilateral simultânea, presença de ruídos na Articulação Temporomandibular e fechamento labial assistemático durante a realização da função. Durante a deglutição houve contração da musculatura perioral e presença de resíduos após essa função. Encontrou-se na fala distorção no fonema /r/. Houve dor à palpação nos músculos mastigatórios e diminuição da tonicidade na musculatura perioral e mastigatória. Encontrou-se alto impacto na qualidade de vida, totalizando em 32 pontos. Na avaliação após a intervenção fonoaudiológica, observou-se melhora nas funções de mastigação (pré: 4 pontos, pós: 1 ponto), deglutição (pré:14, pós :5), respiração (pré: 3, pós: 1) e fala (pré: 7, pós: 1), na mobilidade muscular (pré: 8, pós 1), na tonicidade da musculatura (pré 5, pós: 0) e na dor à palpação (pré: 10, pós: 2). Houve melhora na postura dos lábios e melhora significante na qualidade de vida, passando de 32 para 8 pontos. Constatou-se melhora na fisiologia das funções estomatognáticas, diminuição da dor à palpação, equilíbrio no tônus, na mobilidade muscular e melhora na qualidade de vida.

RESUMO Objetivo Investigar a influência da fotobiomodulação associada à terapia miofuncional orofacial (TMO) em pacientes com disfunção temporomandibular muscular (DTM). Método Trata-se de uma pesquisa do tipo ensaio-clínico randomizado e cego, com uma amostra de 11 mulheres com DTM muscular, dividida em dois grupos. O Grupo Experimental (GE) composto por 05 voluntárias submetidas à TMO associada à fotobiomodulação, e o Grupo Controle Positivo (GC) composto por 06 mulheres submetidas à TMO associada à fotobimodulação inativa (placebo). A intervenção foi realizada em 12 sessões: uma avaliação, 10 sessões de fonoterapia associada à fotobiomodulação, e uma reavaliação. Para os desfechos foram consideradas a investigação da percepção de dor, com a Escala Visual Analógica (EVA), a investigação da sensibilidade à palpação com o protocolo Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD), e a verificação da qualidade de vida (QV) por meio do protocolo Oral Health Impact Profle – short form (OHIP-14). Resultados o GE teve aumento nas medidas dos movimentos de abertura e de protrusão mandibular, e evidenciou melhora na avaliação da QV. Conclusão A TMO quando associada à fotobiomodulação contribuiu no aumento da amplitude dos movimentos mandibulares e com ganhos importantes na percepção da qualidade de vida, e com melhora significativa nos quadros dolorosos das voluntárias com DTM.
