Strength training protocols in hemiparetic individuals post stroke: a systematic review

Abstract: Introduction: Hemiparesis is one of the main sequels of stroke. Evidence suggests that muscle strength exercises are important in rehabilitation programs for hemiparetic patients, but wide variation in previously studied protocols makes the most suitable choice difficult in clinical practice. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate strength training protocols for people with hemiparesis after stroke. Methods: A systematic review of literature was performed in the PubMed, PEDro (Physiotherapy Evid… Show more

“…This may increase their frequency and ambulation distance, as well as in performing basic activities, such as sitting and rising, or climbing and descending stairs [28]. In a systematic review of twelve studies that emphasized strength training in hemiparetic patients, the authors noted that although this treatment strategy results in functional benefits, especially in the patients' lower limb, the main limitation of these studies was the lack of procedures standardization [8].…”

“…To regain locomotor capacity is one of the main goals in these patients' rehabilitation. In this sense, conventional rehabilitation techniques produce positive results over time [7], especially muscle strengthening programs that reduce strength deficits [8,9]. However, such strategies have as a limiting factor, monotony and boredom in exercise [10], which often generate motivational problems and reduce adherence to treatment programs [11].…”

“…4 Many rehabilitation strategies for stroke have been suggested, though the choice of appropriate programs remains uncertain. [4][5][6] A major focus of stroke rehabilitation is to increase muscle strength and enhance proprioceptive function, thus improving walking function to a safe level for community ambulation. [7][8][9] Muscle strengthening for stroke generally consists of for benefits to accrue without exacerbating the spasticity after stroke.…”
